Derby is a solid black female. The reason I kept this bitch for my breeding program was that she had a great pedigree and prey drive like a cat as a puppy. I had not seen that kind of drive in a pup.

She is in a foster home and gone through obedience training. One of her male puppies from Orfey went through the Birmingham Alabama police patrol dog school at 12 months of age and finished very high in the class. I owned one of her males (also from Orfey) and used him in the production of my video "The First Steps of Bite Work video 101-b). See photo of Derby's son - Hawk.

Derby's sire, Queck was in the Sch USA Nationals 4 times. He was a dog that should not have been a competition dog because he was too hard. In the end that is what got him - the handler could not control the dog in the bite work during the OUTs.

Hanna (Derby's mother) is one of my better bitches from Natan.

TESTIMONIAL:

September 7, 1999

Greetings all in Wisconsin. Update at 15 weeks is incredible as always. 'Rene' has now managed to utilize most forms of transportation including airline, auto, elevator, and over the Labor Day weekend rafting (See attached photo of Rene at the helm in Shawano, WI). I believe that trains and shuttle are the only options left. She did get car sick the first 30 minute trip we took but since then has mastered the back seat well. The 900 mile round trip IN - WI - IN this past weekend was just a long nap for her.

She is progressing very quickly and both my girls and I are also easy to train. She sleeps silently through the night in her wire crate and waits patiently for us to get moving in the a.m. Tennis balls and towels on a string are shelved all over the house. The puppy tug arrived today and Rene wore herself out countering. I had to remind Rene about our family policy against body piercing after a sit/down session involving turkey hot dogs in my mouth resulted in a small lower lip nibble.

Her 'fear stage' seems to have passed. She is very alert and confident often observing in silence strange new people or other dogs. Rene appears to size up the situation first and then decide on her response. I was afraid that she had no bark until her recent contact with some unleashed mutts from the neighborhood. These two dogs charged us from behind and Rene detected the on coming charge long before I knew it was coming. I reached down to pick her up and she would have none of that and charged to the end of the lead with tremendous confidence and much barking. The thugs left without further incident.

Rene being jet black leads to all kinds of debates with non-know- it- all's who claim she is a lab-GSD mix. According to all the experts only AKC knows what the color(s) are supposed to be and certainly not all black. I just smile and nod while suggesting they come see us in a year or so!

Many thanks for the wonderful dog, video(s), assorted products, and great service.

Dave, Jess, Sara Hullinger

Rene

TESTIMONIAL:

Here is a brief synopsis of our puppy Valerie vom Leerburg(Zie)from the Derby-Otis litter:

APPEARANCE

She has a large head and large ears. We have not seen a picture of Derby but her head and ears look much like Otis. She has a good deal of pigment but now at almost 8 months she seems to be lightening up some. She also has a good deal of red tint in her fur.

She has a very strong chest and weighs 58 pounds as of last week. Her hind legs are still a bit lanky. We have not trained her on a stump as the French do, consequently her sitz is not very compact.

TEMPERMENT

She is very good with people and particularly children. She has very sound nerves and is not gun shy at all. She is not a sharp dog. She is a hard puppy but is very forgiving after exposure to pain. She does not pout or shy away.

She is also very smart. The few commands that we have taught her she has learned very quickly. She likes to please.

PREY DRIVE

Her drive is extreme. She goes crazy for tennis balls. We do not need to animate the sack too much for her to start biting. As a matter of fact she stalks the unanimated sack just like a cat, waiting for us to put movement in it. If we move the sack slowly so does she before jumping on it. If we animate the sack with acceleration--fast and faster--she accelerates accordingly. These moves are very cat-like.

BITE

She loves to bite. At 8 months she is still quite mouthy and still chews on shoe strings and cuffs. Her bite is getting fuller. But she does not have all her teeth in yet. She responds to corrections by becoming mouthy. Her concentration on the sack or her chew toys is impressive. Once she is focused on the bite the schlager stick or other noise does not detract her. On the contrary, these distractions seem to focus her more.

OTHER PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS

She is very agile and has an impressive array of moves when chasing the ball or playing with other pups. She is not particularly dog friendly, though. However, this may be a result of not having exposed her to many dogs when she was younger for fear of Parvovirus. She loves to jump and aims her bite very well before taking off.

She has gotten a clean bill of health from the vet.

There is nothing that we do not like about her. She is the best dog we have ever had. We definitely recommend another litter.

Thanks again Ed,
Nadja & Homayun

A TESTIMONIAL FROM A CUSTOMER WITH A DERBY PUP:

Ed,

I can't thank you enough for this Derby-Chucho puppy. He is the best thing that has happened to me in a long time. I wish I could spend every minute with him, but until I graduate from college this spring, it will be hard. I am impressed with this breeding. The drives are incredible. Tito is very explosive when in prey. To him, nothing can beat him. He is not afraid of anything and when introduced to new stimuli he adjusts quickly. I believe that you made one hell of a selection for me. I can't thank you enough.

Thanks,
Jeff
