Everyone should have an opportunity to own a dog like Nikie. He was a once in a lifetime dog. There are no dogs that I am aware of that were OFA excellent, KKIa, in the schutzhund nationals 3 times, the high scoring protection dog the last time in the DVG nationals in Florida, FH with 100 points, and worked for awhile with me on my sheriff department. You just don't see this very often.
As a breeder I am just greatfull for the females that he gave me for my breeding program and the time he spent being a companion and guardian of my family and home. He was not a perfect dog but he was truely a great dog. I am just thankfull that I have about 100 straws of his semen to use at some time in the future when I no longer have his daughters and granddaughters to breed. His pedigree will be in my bloodline for years to come.
I saw a poem that came to mind on the day I had to put Nikie down.
When a beloved pet dies, it goes to this place. There is always food and warm spring weather. The old and frail are made young again. Those that are maimed are made whole again. They play all day with each other.
There is only one thing missing. They are not with their special person who loved them on Earth. So, each day they run and play, until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up! The nose twitches! The ears are up! The eyes are staring! And this one runs from the group!
You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet, you take him or her in your arms and embrace. Your face is kissed again and again and again, and you look once more into the eyes of your trusted pet. Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated.
