1998 Mondioring Championship

-2008001-0 -- 1 Hour, 50 Minutes, 36 Seconds

In October 1998, I traveled to Brugge, Belgium to film the 1998 Mondioring Championships. Ten years before this I was in Tourni, Belgium to film one of the first Mondioring Championships. This return visit shows how the Mondioring Sport has matured over the past 10 years.

This event takes place in a different country every year. Next year (1999) the finals will be in France, last year (1997) they were in Spain. Every championship has a different theme. This year it was a medieval theme. The competitors were delivered to the field in a horse drawn buggy. The down under distraction for the level one and level two dogs involved Knights having a sword fight on the field. I did include one dog from level two on this video so those people interested in the lower level one and level two could see what exercises these dog must go through.

To compete in the Mondioring you must have a dog with rock solid nerves. The distractions change with every event. In this competition the helper hid in a horse trailer that was parked on the field. There were Schutzhund blinds, a number of tents, and bails of straw stacked around the field to serve as distractions for the dog. Many of the dogs had problems with this exercise.br>
The video is not meant as a documentary of the Mondioring, but rather a video of the exercises in this years competition. I included the first and second place dogs along with Kathy O'Brian's dog from the United States. Kathy was the only competitor for this country. While she did not have luck in the competition she did a nice job showing her dog, (which she found out later was injured).

The first place competitor was Roland Huber. Roland is a Frenchman who has competed in the French Ring and Campagne. He has been the National Campagne Champion in the past with his dogs. Roland has been involved in the Mondioring Sport for years and it shows in his handling skills.

The second place dog handler is Rene Sagarra from Switzerland. Rene has been involved with dogs for 40 years. He is a dog handler for a security company by trade. He is extremely knowledgeable in the Mondioring and I send people to his web site all of the time to learn more about the Mondioring. You can find the link to Rene's web site on my link page.

The Judge holds the green & red flags. When the dog reaches 1/2 way he will hold up the green or the red flag to indicate if the dog should bite or do a recall - the handler never knows until the flags go up!

Like Schutzhund or the Belgium Ring there are three levels of the Mondioring. I included one dog on the tape from Level 2 Mondio. The handler is Kaatje Debal from Belgium. She had a very nice dog (Quatros v.Joefarm) who is from one of the better working bloodline kennels in Belgium.

The breeder of Joefarm (Bertran) and his wife Nickie Joe were the main organizers of this years event. Without their help I would not have been able to produce this video. Bertran and Nickie are avid competitors in the Mondio and the Belgium Ring Sport. They were able to get permission for me to film this event from the field of competition. So you will be right there with the judges when you watch this video.

The image quality of this streaming video is nowhere near the quality it was when it was originally filmed. It is also nowhere near the quality of our current Leerburg training DVDs.

Many of the older dog shows and competitions were not encoded into a computer format until the video tapes were 20 to 25 years old. Over the years, the image quality of video tape deteriorates. These older dog shows are being offered for their historical significance. That's why we are streaming videos for its current price which originally sold for up to $100.00.

These videos are no longer offered on DVDs.
