1997 KNPV 1 Championships

Uploaded on January 1, 2008 • 2 hr, 3 min
This is the video of the 1997 Netherlands Police Dog Championships, otherwise known as the KNPV 1 Championships. The competition takes place in the same stadium every year in St. Hertogenbosch, Holland.

The KNPV is one of the fasted growing dog sports in America. The reason for this is that dogs trained for the KNPV are much better suited to Police Service work than Schutzhund dogs or one of the other European Ring Sports.

The PH 1 dogs are the young dogs. They have have never been to a National Championship and can only come one time to the KNPV 1 Championship.

This is a demanding and difficult dog sport. I was given permission to film the event from the side of the competition field. This resulted in outstanding video footage of some of the best KNPV Malinois in the world. There are some spectacular catches in bite work.

This year I followed Api Kamps and his dog Quatro through the various obedience exercises. Api has been to the national championships 14 times, he has won both the KNPV 1 and KNPV 2 National Championships in the past. Over the years Api has titled 26 dogs to KNPV 1. 14 of them with perfect scores of 435 points. Quatro was one of 2 dogs in this years championships that was a registered dog (most of the dogs I the KNPV are not registered).

The video includes all of the bite work for every dog in the nationals (Only 10 are allowed to compete in bite work - if 12 dogs qualify for the nationals - 2 of them are eliminated after the morning bite work exercises).

This video was filmed from the side of the field and I have excellent footage of the event.

The image quality of this streaming video is nowhere near the quality it was when it was originally filmed. It is also nowhere near the quality of our current Leerburg training DVDs.

Many of the older dog shows and competitions were not encoded into a computer format until the video tapes were 20 to 25 years old. Over the years, the image quality of video tape deteriorates. These older dog shows are being offered for their historical significance. That's why we are streaming videos for its current price which originally sold for up to $100.00.

These videos are no longer offered on DVDs.
