Question: I am teaching my puppy to go in the kennel by throwing a treat inside and giving a "kennel" command. Now I'm trying to transition to giving the command and then rewarding the behavior, but now the dog won't go inside first and keeps staring at the treat. Where did I go wrong?

Hi guys,

I have purchased several of your great videos and they have been awesome. However, I am getting hung up in one area. I am teaching my new puppy to go in the kennel by throwing a treat inside and giving a "kennel" command. Now I'm trying to transition to giving the command and then rewarding the behavior with a marker/treat. Sounds simple... but now the dog won't go inside first and keeps staring at the treat. Where did I go wrong here? Thanks in advance!

Answer:

I would suggest that you rework the marker away from the crate. Your pup has been relying on the treat FIRST, which is not marker training…it’s luring.

I’d go back and review bits of the food video that you have for the timing. You may want to view the marker video too, The Power of Training Dogs with Markers.

You’ve got it backwards. You don’t throw the treat and then say the word, if you do it that way the word means nothing to the pup. This is a pretty common problem which doesn’t seem like much to us but to the dog it’s a big deal.

Also your pup should not be able to see the treat before he performs the behavior, it should be hidden inside your hand, pocket or bait pouch with your hands neutral.
