Leerburg's Online Teaching Engagement Skills Course

The course has met its Aims and Objectives in my view; I would not change what is a comprehensive and concise explanation of what the course is all about: developing engagement and understanding the process of being able to achieve this goal.

A lot of thought and development has been put into the course content, from the very beginning at the introduction and explanation of understanding of terminology used throughout the course content, to seeing the results that are achievable by better understanding and developing the skills explained. Putting into practice the learnt skills and seeing the rewards that it brings to the relationship between oneself and the dog.

A must introduction course for all owners / handlers new and old, well done.

Question: I've been working engagement training for 2 months and my dog whines a lot. Should I correct him for this?

I have worked for past 2 months using your "engagement" methods, which I feel is the right way to train. But my 17 month, high energy male lab mix whines far too often that is very disappointing. He whines in the house, he whines when we visit neighbors while he is on leash, he whines on walks on leash. Is it still all about "engagement"? To date, I have not really corrected his whining, although I really feel like some very hard corrections is what is needed, is it? I use a prong collar. I do have a dominate collar, but have not used, as I don't want to go there yet. Any advice? He is a great dog, loves to play fetch and run. As I type, he is whining at the front door. Thanks for your help.

Cindy's Response:

Have you tried crating him in a quiet area away from any activity. Whining is typically a sign of anxiety and over stimulation. It’s nearly impossible to correct away. If you use a prong, you’ll likely make it worse.

If he’s under command (i.e. down) does he still do this? Did he do a lot of whining before you started engagement training?

On Leerburg's Pet Corrector
Thanks Dr. Mugford. This product is fantastic! I have two dogs. A Lab-Chow mix, 10 yrs old and a Chow-Shepard mix, 4yrs old. The Pet Corrector spray can was so easy to use to help correct their bad habit of excessive barking when anyone passed by our house or came to the door. We started using it in the car now for our younger one.

All we have to sometimes now is show them the can or put it down near them along with speaking to them. It's been a great humane way to discipline our little buddies.
