Introducing Mark Keating

Leerburg's New DVD Series on Decoy Training
Introducing Mark Keating

Leerburg is currently producing a series of decoy training DVDs with our friend Mark Keating. Mark is an excellent trainer and instructor. The first of these DVDs, titled The Mechanics of Working a Dog in a Bite Suit, will be available very soon. We expect to produce a number of DVDs with Mark.

This series of training DVDs will have two purposes:

  • The first is to teach decoys correct and safe training concepts in a bite suit.
  • The second, just as important purpose, is to teach dog handlers exactly what, why, and how a decoy should work a dog in a bite suit. We want to teach dog handlers exactly what decoys are doing with their dogs. We want dog handlers to recognize good training as well as inappropriate training. We want to give handlers the information they need to be able to discuss and communicate a training plan with their decoy.

The short video in this newsletter was filmed at a seminar Mark did in Ohio. Mark has been training dogs in protection work since 1998. He has worked several dogs in the discipline of Mondio and French Ring. He has titled over 10 dogs of various breeds in French Ring, bringing both a male and female Malinois to Ring III. He was the US winner of the French Ring decoy super selection and decoy of the year award. Mark is currently preparing his 3rd competition dog for his career in Ring III.

Question: When I play tug with my 9 week old GSD pup he humps after winning the towel. Is this a worry?

I have a 9 week old male pup from strong working lines. had him a week. Really super, level headed, drives that us working folk are looking for. One snag though. When playing with a towel, rag, old shirt, he has started humping it? after winning it. Is this a worry, what action should I take. So far I distract him and continue the game. I'm following Micheal Ellis systems on training. Would appreciate some sort of guide. Thanks

Cindy's Response:

I wouldn’t worry about it, just redirect him as you have been. It’s fairly common when pups get ramped up playing.

I hope this helps.

On Leerburg's 6 ft. Soft Grip Prong Leash

I love these red barn meat rolls for tracking. They are ideal and the dogs absolutely go crazy for it. I also add this to my trail mix of the soft training treats. I have tried the Natural Balance food rolls like this and it is really greasy and just gross looking. The Red Barn Meat rolls are not like that at all. They are moist but not greasy and is very easy to cut; even when cold. I store this in a bag in my fridge and cut them into pieces as needed. The Medium roll has lasted me about 3-5 months with tracking and training every week. óCourtney
