Making Obedience Interesting for your Dog

Making Obedience Interesting for your Dog

When I am sure my puppy knows a command, and he does it 99 times, but refuses to do it the 100th time, do I give a negative marker (of NO) or do I just repeat the command and lure him into a sit? This puppy knows exactly what a sit is, but sometimes he looks at me with those "what are you talking about?" eyes.

Leerburg Q&A
Ask your training quesiton here

Question: Do you have a DVD that shows large healthy dogs playing together at the park? My dog will watch TV and he could learn how to play with other dogs by watching this.

Dear Leerburg,

I have a large German Shepherd mix male neutered age 3. He needs help in learning to socialize happily with other dogs. Can I buy a DVD or CD showing large healthy dogs playing together? My dog will watch TV if and only if dogs are on it. He can learn some by watching other large dogs playing without barking.

Please reply. Thank You.

I know many dogs enjoy watching TV, several of mine do, but dogs don’t learn by watching DVDs.

It’s up to the owner to show the dog what they expect from them.

We don’t advocate letting your dog play with dogs you don’t know, it’s not a normal behavior for most adult dogs. We have an article about dog parks, Ed has written an article about dog parks.

on Leerburg's 2-Handled Synthetic Mini Tug

I really like the two handle synthetic mini tug. It was much bigger in circumference than I anticipated it being (compared to my dog at the time). However, it turned out to be the perfect size for him when he got a little older and grew a little more. It is a very sturdy tug and has shown no wear and tear in the last year and a half I have had it.

New Course! Detection / Nosework with Andrew Ramsey

Whether you train working detection K-9's, are interested in Nosework activities for your dog but don't know how to get started or are looking to add Nosework to your business, these are the courses for you. Andrew's system for training Nosework is both simple and highly effective. It blends concepts from the Military Working Dog Program with the use of a verbal mark, reward based training and cooperative play, to form a very clear and effective communication system that avoids many of the pitfalls of traditional programs. These courses explain how to engage your dog in the game of searching for a target odor and will teach the handler how to motivate, handle, read and reward your dog in order to build a strong working partnership as well as a focused response.
