Question from a Leerburg Customer

Question from a Leerburg Customer
on Training in Protection Sport or Schutzhund

I'm interested in either protection sport training or Schutzhund. My concern with doing so is that I still want my dog to be friendly and a family pet, as I have two children. I'm wondering if awakening the aggressiveness through training would change his good temperament. Any advice and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Question & Answers

Question:My boyfriend has a GSD that has bitten 2 people. This dog growls and shows his teeth at me everyday. My boyfriend says the dog does this because I don’t give him love and attention. The dog won’t listen to either of us and does what he wants. Help!

The info on your site is very helpful. I have been with my boyfriend and we have been together for 2 years. He has a 4 year old German shepherd that is 100 pounds. In the past year, the dog has bitten 2 different people. Ever since he bit those people, he has become more aggressive towards me. He hasn't bit me (yet) but he growls and shows his teeth at me everyday. My boyfriend does not discipline him at all and he constantly yells at him all night long to lay down because he paces around the apartment. My boyfriend and I got into a huge fight because I think he needs to go to a shelter or be put down. My boyfriend says he doesn't have the time to train him properly. The dog does not listen to him or me at all. The dog does whatever he wants. My boyfriend says he growls and sneers at me because I don't give him love and attention. Ever since he bit, and my boyfriend did nothing about it, I am frustrated and think he should not be a dog owner. He gets mad when I suggests getting rid of the dog. Help!!

Answer:

It sounds like you need a new boyfriend. By his own admission, he doesn’t have the time to train him. If what you have written is accurate, then I would expect some legal issues for your boyfriend in the future. There is so much anti dog legislation out there now that I won’t be surprised when your boyfriend ends up in court due to his lack of responsible dog ownership.

When all the humans involved aren’t on board with the dog in the household, there really isn’t anything I can do in this situation. This is a people problem first and foremost, when you get that handled then we can talk about the dog’s issues.

Good luck!

Hi Cindy,

What a great bunch of pictures you had to choose from, I enjoyed looking at every one of them.
It must have been an extremely difficult decision to choose the winning photos from among so many awesome shots !   Was picking the winners a team effort, or was only one person responsible for the final decision ?  Who ever the person or persons were... GREAT JOB !!

After losing my beloved Dobe, 22 years ago, I was too heartbroken to get another dog so I decided to get a cat.   Now I find myself down to my last kitty, and losing two of them within a short period of time, wasn't any easier than losing my dog.  Reading  your website has brought me endless hours of pleasure... I'm so thankful for it's existence.

Best regards,
Marijeanne

Cindy's Response:

Hi Marijeanne,

Thanks for taking the time to write. It was a team effort selecting the winners, but it was a tough job. There were so many great ones.  We were originally only going to select one and we ended up selecting 23 :)

Thanks again, I appreciate the kind words.

Cindy Rhodes
