Question: Is it ok to let our new poodle puppy sleep in our bedroom in his crate his first few nights?

Hi Cindy!

We are a young couple who will be getting a miniature poodle puppy  and we are wondering if it is a good idea to let the puppy sleep in our bedroom in his crate for the first couple of nights so that his transition to his new home is easier. Would that be spoiling the puppy and making it want to sleep in our room for ever or would it be easy to move the crate to another area of the house after the puppy has settled in its new environment? If so, do you have any suggestions for this transition period?

Thank you!

Cindy's Response:

I personally allow puppies to sleep crated in my bedroom at first. This gives them some comfort and it also allows for me to hear when they may need to go outside for a potty break.

I'd recommend reading some of the puppy training material on our website.

I'd also highly recommend viewing the videos Your Puppy 8 Weeks to 8 Months and Establishing Pack Structure with your Puppy.

I think they'll help you a lot. Congrats and enjoy the new puppy.

On Leerburg's The Power of Playing Tug with Your Dog DVD

I learned a tremendous amount from this video and from the Power of Training Dogs with Food. When I purchased the video I had been training my 1.5 year old Mal for about 4 months (she was a rescue). I backed up and used the ME system and now she pays much better attention to me (she's expecting me to play, wanting me to play, activating me to play), she is much more engaged in the exercises and less distracted. I think this video was fantastic. Thank you for making this training available.
