Bored Pet Dogs?

Bored Pet Dogs?

Many dog owners do not have the time to invest in a formal training regimen, so instead they look to a professional trainer to solve all their problems. Unfortunately, the issues often lie in the owners' lack of time to invest in training. Many pet dogs are left at home alone all day and do not receive enough physical or mental stimulation. This can result in the dog developing bad habits. Generally, this is when a trainer is brought in, but how does a trainer solve a problem if the owner is unwilling to put in the work at home? Michael Ellis has a few suggestions and some outside of the box solutions to this common problem.

Leerburg's Online Basic Dog Obedience Course

I gained a ton of insight on learning about building a trusting relationship with my dog and being a good pack leader. I now can understand why "engagement" is such a valued skill to teach your dog. its all about building a strong connection with your dog and being able to have them follow you and listen to your commands no matter where you take them. I think socialization is so important and them always looking to you because like you say, they always want what you have and look to you.

Balanced dog training is awesome because you teach the dog through motivation and only use corrections once you know they are 110% sure of the command (using durations and distractions).

I don't have any suggestions other than maybe more short essays at the end of the week to write an example of how your training for that week with a story about your training sessions... and us have access to read others like in the discussion board. Just more live examples of what people are doing wrong so we can learn from that. it helps me to do comparisons.

I really enjoyed how this course is broken up and how we have extra long access. Thank you.

Question: My 1 1/2 year old Shih Tzu tied with my male 3 times over the last 2 days, does this mean she'll have a large litter?

Hi Cindy,

My 1 1/2 year old Shih Tzu has just tied with my male 3 times over the past 2 days, which where all due to not being under my watch I may add (husband and children). Will she have a large litter? I'm concerned because it has not been a year since her last litter. She only had 3 that time, but they where between 6-8 ounces at birth.

Cindy's Response:

There is no way for me to know the answer to your question. The number of ties doesn't always determine the number of puppies. I've bred females once and had litters of 14.

So she tied THREE times accidentally? ..I think I would consider either spaying her or neutering your male if you can't keep them separated during her heat cycles.

I keep all my dogs intact but I don't allow them direct contact unless I am planning a breeding. She's not even fully mature at 1 1/2 years old, especially to be having a second litter already.

Follow Up:

I always keep them separated, but my kids and husband are a lot slower at re crating them when they come back in from walking. I did not want to breed her this cycle. I had a belly band on him when he was out of the crate, but I can not control what my kids do when I'm not home. Trust me, I am not excited with the round of vet bills I am about to rack up. I take my dog for pre and post natal visits as well as her pups. I'm just trying to get a feel for what I'm in for before the vet tells me she is having 8 puppies when he is able to palpate and then confirm with ultrasound and x-ray.

On Leerburg's Wire Basket Muzzle

I bought another muzzle before this one and it's night and day. Make sure you watch the video on baiting your dog so your K-9 looks at the muzzle as a positive thing. I only use this on the job or when I'm in a store. I must say the fit is perfect and just bait your dog very slow with the treats you can buy on this site and he or she will go into the muzzle to get the treat on their own without you holding it. I love it!
