My dog just tested positive for Lyme Disease. Have you ever heard of a false positive? Would you get a second opinion?

Full Question:
Hi Cindy,

I have just gotten a test result from my vet that gives a positive for Lyme Disease for my four year old GSD.

Have you ever heard of a false positive? Would you get a second opinion?

I know that Leerburg recommends the RAW diet and alternative medicine for dogs, and I have followed those recommendations over the years.

Is there a link to any suggestions for Lyme Disease on your site?

Thank you for your time.
Cindy
Cindy Cindy's Answer:
I'm no expert about Lyme Disease but I believe that a dog (or human) can harbor the disease and be symptom free unless the system is stressed or the disease is more advanced.

I think if you are concerned enough about this to email me, then it probably warrants a second opinion.

We've had 3 dogs that are Lyme positive just this year, and we treated them allopathically with antibiotics. Lyme Disease is no joke and while I prefer to use homeopathic and holistic methods, I worry about complications (like kidney failure) from this horrible disease. Maybe as I become more educated and confident in my ability to treat my dogs homeopathically, I'll change my thinking in the future but we treated all of our Lyme positive dogs with antibiotics.

If you google Lyme disease and dogs you'll come up with a lot of info.

We have a vet list here if you care to try to find an alternative vet for another opinion. If you don't find one in your area you can do a google search to (hopefully) find one close by.

Good luck with your dog.
