I just rescued an adult male dog, who seems to have had no housebreaking taught to him. I've read about your isolation method. Is this the right path, and if so, what's next in training him?

Full Question:
Hello,

I've recently adopted an adult male rescue dog (4-yr old-Dachshund) who I'm told was turned in most likely by a local breeder. I currently have a 3.5-yr-old female Dachshund. The new addition is very sweet and submissive, but seems to have had no housebreaking (or anything else) taught to him. He pees everywhere in the house, and will occasionally poop in the house as well.

I've read about your isolation method, which appeals to me. Is this the right path, and if so, what's next in training him? Also, what do you think of "tinkle belts"? I really appreciate any feedback, as I don't have much dog experience.

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
I’d definitely start with our groundwork program today.

I don’t recommend those belts because they really don’t address the issue at hand which is teaching the dog that the inside of the house is not a bathroom.

I’d also recommend our housetraining eBook and Basic Obedience.

Keep him confined and if you want him out with you, make sure he’s had a chance to do his business outside and then keep him leashed to you ALL THE TIME.
