I'm a bit worried about feeding her fish. I know it's good for her, but does the same thing apply to fish bones as to other meat? Can I feed her whole mackerel-type fish with heads and fins and bones?

Full Question:
Hi Cindy,

I have a 3 month old female Rottweiler, she was weaned onto kibble by the breeder. After reading your website (among others), I switched her onto a raw food diet and she's loving it. Best thing is to watch her open an egg for herself!

I'm a bit worried about feeding her fish. I know it's good for her, but does the same thing apply to fish bones as to other meat? That they're safe when raw, but brittle when cooked?

What I'm getting at is can I feed her whole mackerel-type fish with heads and fins and bones? Also, my fishmonger gave me some salmon heads. They have a decent amount of fish meat on them and they are dirt cheap, but can she eat them? And are they nutritionally ok? They've got quite poky teeth, should I remove them?

Thanks for a great website!!
Cindy
Cindy Cindy's Answer:
I don’t feed a lot of raw fish. My dogs don’t really care for it, but some of the spines/fins on them worry me.

My motto is "if in doubt about whether it’s going to be a problem, don’t feed it."

A lot of people feed fish regularly without issue, but I choose to feed canned (cooked) fish. I use canned mackerel and sardines.

If you are new to raw feeding I’d suggest the following books, Raw Dog Food and Natural Nutrition for Dogs & Cats. We give both these books to our puppy customers and rarely have questions about the diet. One of the newer feeding books we offer is Raw & Natural Nutrition for Dogs. This title covers homemade cooked & raw diets complete with recipes. I highly recommend all these books.
