My vet asked if I would like to do a Gastropexy at the same time as my dog's spay. Do you have any info or know any one who has done the surgery on such a young dog?

Full Question:
Hi,

I have a 5 1/2 month old Great Prynees, Maremma cross Rottie, Australian Shepard Female puppy that I had asked my vet about being spayed and at what age. He said 6 months was typical and asked if I wanted to do the Gastropexy at the same time. I am having problems finding anyone that has had this surgery done on such a young dog. I am wondering if they are suggesting it as she is my first dog or if they believe she is at such a high risk of bloat? When I look at the individual breeds, they don't seem to be the highest of breeds but then any breed of dog could bloat. I talked to local great dane breeder and they haven't done it. Do you have any info or know any one who has done the surgery on such a young dog?

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
I don’t know anyone who has had this done to any dog of any age (let alone a puppy) as a routine procedure. I’d be wary of a vet that suggests this. I’d probably get another vet’s take on it.

User Response:
Thanks Cindy. That seems to be the response I keep getting. Have only found one vet that has done it, but didn't even do it to her own Great Dane. She said she wouldn't have even mentioned it to me if I had gone there.

Thank you for your time.
