Question
What type of equipment do I need for training a retrieve?
Answer
We have a Starter Retrieve Kit. Dumbbell size is based on the dog's mouth width. Instructions on how to measure are below. If you need help selecting after measuring your dog, let me know!
If you're unsure what size dumbbell to order, here is a good way to help determine the bit width and end size.
HOW TO MEASURE THE WIDTH OF YOUR DOG'S MOUTH
You will need an object such as a pencil or pen, a ruler, and follow these simple steps. Most people prefer that the dumbbell fits snugly (but not tight) in the dog's mouth, just behind the canine teeth with
the dog's lips resting comfortably where the tapered sides meet the flat portion of the bar.
To find this measurement, place the pencil or bar-like item in the dog's mouth just behind the canine teeth while the mouth is shut. Slide your fingers in from the sides until they are snug against the lips
and mark the location. Using a ruler measure the distance between the marks and record this measurement (we recommend measuring several times to confirm the measurement is accurate).
