Video: Michael Ellis on The Issue of Tug Possession
[*spacer*]

In this video, Michael Ellis discusses the main principles of engagement. These are things to keep in mind when we are talking about holding our dog's attention for sustained periods of time. Engagement is just holding a dog's attention, having sustained focus, and they want something from you, something you can use to reinforce desired behaviors.

This course is now available as a self-study online course: Raising Your Puppy with Michael Ellis. CLICK HERE to sign up!

Question

I think the ball on a strap that I have is too hard and/or too small for my 13 month old German Shepherd, do you have a recommendation?

Answer

Good afternoon, for my German Shepherds and Malinois, I start with the larger foam ball and then the squish ball, both of those seem to be easy for them to grip and they are durable. Once they are doing well with those I find that my dogs love the erratic ball which is harder but because of its shape it's easy to hold on to.

You can stay with the foam ball if your dog likes it, I just like to offer different toys into my training so I mix it up a bit.
