Jute vs Synthetic

?? Bite Surfaces ??

If you’re developing a young puppy for any of the protection disciplines, it's important to make sure you change the materials of equipment you use to avoid your dog becoming too fixed on one texture. With young puppies, we expose them to a range of biting surfaces including jute, synthetic suit material, fleece, leather, rubber and more so they don’t develop a clear preference or equipment bias. In this clip, Ryan shows his young 14 week old puppy, Arthur, switching between our Level 1 Synthetic Puppy Arm Sleeve & Level 1 Jute Puppy Arm Sleeve. More information on this topic and puppy bite work foundations can be found in our video, The Foundation of Puppy Bite Work w/ Michael Ellis.

Question:

I'm interested in biking with my GSD, but I'm worried about him lunging and pulling the bike over when he sees a rabbit, fox, deer, etc. What is your experience with this?

Answer:

My dogs ignore distractions like animals, other dogs and people. I would not ride my bike with a 98 pound dog that isn’t trained to these distractions. If you can’t take your dog for a regular walk and have him ignore wildlife and keep focus on you, then I’d be worried about moving at high speeds and trying to maintain control.
