Question
Can I use a remote collar on my 16 week old German Shepherd?
Answer
Are you using marker training and food rewards? Puppies are basically like small kids and I'm not a fan of using physical or e-collar corrections for what is normal puppy behavior. I don't use e-collars to teach behaviors,
I use them when a dog is older to reinforce behaviors my dog is already doing so I can eventually have him off-leash.
I might suggest teaching him the recall and the foundation basic behaviors using food. Puppies can be challenging and frustrating but if you look at it from their point of view it makes it clear that they are just learning
how the world works. Investing the time into teaching engagement and teaching the puppy how to learn is more valuable long term than adding corrective tools like e-collars or prong collars at such a young age. It
can definitely be more work for us in the short term but it will pay off by creating a dog that wants to work with us because they are our training partner and they enjoy the process. We just have to break down the
training into small sessions (sometimes a minute here or there) and build on the little successes.
