Question
My 8-month-old dog gets very possessive with his toy when I let him have it when we play tug, any suggestions?
Answer
I have a super possessive dog and when I give him the toy he's always on leash and as soon as I give it to him I move backwards quicking while giving him small pops on the leash until he brings the toy to me and jumps
up with it. This was taught with a second person running the dog around in a circle and back to me after I released the toy to him. Here's a short video clip.
If you
do want to do switching, make sure you have two identical toys for right now. Also make your tugging sessions shorter and less intense. The longer you tug, the more possessive the dog is likely to be when you release
the toy to him.
