Full Question:
We will be first time dog owners but my brother in law has used your training videos for his dog and they have worked very well. Our dog will be a family dog, we have a 7 year old that is a little timid around dogs so we know we need a dog that is well trained. We are getting a bernedoodle in about 5-6 weeks. What video would you recommend we start with?

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
Will your new dog be a puppy or an adult?
User Response:
A new puppy, it will be about 8-9 weeks old.

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
I would suggest our puppy videos and housetraining material, which I will add links to below this message. As your puppy grows up a bit, then I would work on general obedience. We don't usually start "real" obedience training until about 4-6 months but it depends on the puppy. They're a lot like kids, some of them are ready for more structured learning earlier and others need to mature mentally a bit more to enjoy the training process.

I will add all those resources below but feel free to check in with me as you raise your new family member if you need some guidance.
Congratulations on the new puppy!

Thank you so much for taking the time to help, there is so much information I feel like I'm drinking from a fire hydrant. I do have another question, what is the best way to travel with the dog? We have van so a crate would fit just fine in the back of it. I've also seen straps that buckle to the seat belt and clip to the dogs collar but I was kinda of leary about that, maybe when the dog is much older? Also, do you suggest a harness or a collar to start with? I'm leaning towards the slip collar you sell to start.

Cindy Cindy's Answer:
I never travel with my dogs unless they are crated, it's the safest way and I get my puppies used to it from day one. I am not a fan of the seatbelt attachments, in the event of an accident most of them are not going to protect your dog enough. You will want a solid crate (not a wire crate) and make sure it's ratchet strapped down so it can't move around.

I use both a harness and the martingale collar with my puppies. I'm raising a puppy now, and I use both so he's accustomed to them. I use the inexpensive nylon harness for puppies, since they grow so quickly.
User Response:
I hadn't seen the cheaper harness, thank you for showing me that one. That is a good point about the safety aspect with that seatbelt attachment. We travel alot during the summer months so I'm looking ahead and trying to do my best to have a solid travel plan. Thanks again, I will look through this information more and start the learning process. :)
