Socializing a Pushy Puppy

Uploaded on January 20, 2014 • 5 min
In this question and answer, Ed Frawley explains why we have changed the ways we socialize our puppies over the past 30 years. We used to do exactly what this customer has already tried and ran into the same issues. We have since changed how we do this and in this video Ed will explain how and why we do this.

I agree with everything stated, but after rehabbing MANY dogs who were highly reactive to strangers, fear biters, or just plain overly "protective," I will say there are other steps that need to be included in this process before anyone should consider it completed. The fact is, the dog WILL react to new people and new people WILL react to the dog, so additional proofing steps need to be taken when the dog DOES interact. Simply to say "my dog doesn't need any new friends," or assuming all people who get near your dog will be passive statues is just not reality.

Very good Ed. I have a 4 year old puppy and he does the same thing. He is a rescue and seems very attached to his new family that he doesn't like others to enter the home. I keep him on a leash and let the guests settle in, but I never take him off the leash. Thanks for the video.

Hi,
Thank you, I compete with our dogs. I have a male that has an IPO1 & a young female that I am starting with. My husband is not a dog trainer, this helped me explain to him. Our dogs do not have to socialize with people at our house.
Thanks, Linda

I have been so wrong for so long! Excellent, I like how clearly you explained this, step by step. I can't wait to try it. Thanks, I feel this is something I can do; without further instruction, and really how much more sense it makes than having the friend be a food dispenser.
