Q. I am thinking about purchasing some tugs for my 4 month old. Which tug would you recommend?
Hi Cindy.

Thank you in advance for your advice. I very much appreciate the help.

I have a 4 month old border collie/aussie and I am thinking about purchasing some tugs for her to play with. She loves to chase a long rope and catch the end of it, and she is very quick, but it is hard to get her to out the toy. Would you recommend using the furry fleece tug (she loves furry animal toys), the synthetic puppy tug or the leather puppy tug?

Thank you

A. I would probably get one of each if you can manage that. The reason is that some dogs will become partial to one particular surface to bite/play with and it can cause issues down the road. I introduce my little puppies to jute, linen, fleece, leather, rubber, plastic, etc...

I want my adult dogs to bite anything I offer, anytime, anywhere. By exposing them to many different items when they are young you reduce the risk of equipment bias later. I hope this helps.

The tugs we sell are made of the best synthetic fabric available (not jute). I choose to have my tugs made from this fabric to get as much durability as possible without unnecessary wear on the dog's teeth. It's a balancing act. Jute wears too easily and some other fabrics that last a little longer are too hard on the teeth.

Drive building in adult dogs is always done with the smallest tug. These tug have one handle or two handles. It can be moved very, very quickly. The goal of drive building with a small tug is to move it around your legs and body at a speed that the dog can not get at it. Moving them around in short quick movements forces the dog to move quickly if he has the drive to catch it - when the dog misses the tug it builds frustration and frustration builds drive.
