I went to my first Schutzhund seminar in October 1974. I was instantly hooked on protection dog training. During the next 10 years I went to every seminar I could find in this country on training protection dogs, Schutzhund dogs, and police service dogs. In 1983 I produced my first bite training video titled "Protection Training the Beginning with Bernhard Mannel." In the 13 years that followed I learned so much more about protection training that I was forced to update that old video and pass this new information on to my customers. This is being done through this new training tape "The First Steps of Bite Training."

Training Defense is the most misunderstood area of protection dog training. This is evident by going to any Schutzhund trial or looking at half of the Police Service dogs in this country. This training video is intended to help new (and old) trainers. Many experienced trainers get caught up in traditional sport dog training, which is weak in the defensive areas of training. The goal of the training is to bring a young dog further along in its fight drive development.”

The Synthetic Bite Bar is a softer bite bar. The Synthetic Bite Bar is 17 inches long and 9 inches wide. The bite bar has an attached 64" long nylon line with a snap at one end. The inside of the bite bar is lined with 1/8" thick heavy cotton fleece. The handles on the Synthetic Bite Bar are suede covered. All of the stitching is reinforced. The synthetic linen is the same material that our body bite suits are made of. Some people prefer a synthetic bite bar to a jute bite bar because they feel it is easier on their dog's teeth.

This Jute Bite Bar is a softer, but firm bite bar. The Jute Bite Bar is 20 inches long and 11 inches wide. There are two hidden handles inside each end of the bite bar. The handles are covered with foam. There is a third handle added on the bite bar. This handle is located on the near side of the bar and is a stiffer, nylon handle. All of the stitching is reinforced. This bite bar is imported from Germany. Some people prefer a jute bite bar to a synthetic bite bar because they feel it is will last longer and hold up better against their dogs teeth.

The muzzle is available in 4 different sizes. This muzzle is open enough to allow for maximum air flow and comfort for your dog while wearing it. Perfect for those trips to the vet or long walks with your dog. This muzzle also has a forehead strap that runs the length of the dogs nose up between the eyes and attaches to the strap behind their head. This type of strap is very popular with dogs who don't like wearing a muzzle, and also in dogs with larger, wider heads. Perfect to use for added safety with dominant or aggressive dogs.

This Heavy Duty Cotton Drag Line is 15 feet long by 1 inch wide. This is perfect for all types of Schutzhund work and training. This cotton drag line/leash is not made from ordinary cotton webbing. This is thick, durable webbing. The color is olive green. It is 1" wide and made of very durable and strong 1/8" thick cotton. It has a heavy swivel clasp snap for easy hooking off and on the harness or collar. It can also be used for agitation/bite work, tracking or other K-9 work.

This tracking line is made of synthetic material that looks and feels like leather. This 10 meter tracking line can get wet and is great for training. Our Amish maker hasn’t made leather reins in 3 years because he uses this material instead when making bridles and reins for his customers. The tracking line is ½ ” wide by 1/8” thick. It is 1/3 lighter than leather lines, very soft and very pliable.

The tugs we sell are made of the best synthetic fabric and leather available. I choose to have my tugs made from this fabric to get as much durability as possible without unnecessary wear on the dog's teeth. It's a balancing act. The Leather we use won't harm your dogs teeth and can withstand even a mature grip. It is strong and durable.

The Kool Collar is great to use for your dogs whether outside of the house or inside. The Foundation Fundamentals program is designed for all dogs at any skill level, whether a puppy or an adult. The purpose of this program is to build specific skills that your dog needs before you begin his obstacle training. It’s is very difficult to teach agility equipment to a dog if he’s running around with a toy, leaving you to go sniff, mugging you to get his treat, or going to visit others in hopes of finding something better than the reward you’re offering. To achieve your goals in agility, you need a solid working relationship with your dog and a clear and consistent communication system, often referred to as a "handling system." A handling system is no more than a set of verbal and physical cues that tell your dog what you want him to do next. Conflicting cues or missing links in your communication system will limit what your team can achieve in the sport by causing a lack of confidence (the dog slows down, stops, or even leaves the ring) or frustration (the dog spins, barks, or tries to bite the handler). With clarity and consistency in your communication system, your dog will be more confident, focused, and sure of his job, which will allow you and the dog not only to achieve more, but also to enjoy the game more.

Most of us spend lots of time lavishly reinforcing good contact zone performances and start-line stays, but we don’t think about reinforcing and building value for the one thing the agility dog will do more of in his career than anything else—Jump!
