This photo was taken in South Lebanon. The photo shows the United Nations (UNIFIL) Norwegian Dog Platoon.

Norway was the only battalion to use dogs in the line of duty. They had ten patrol dogs, one bomb/explosives dog, and three narcotic dogs. The patrol dogs were GSDs, and their job was to go in front of the night patrols with their handlers as “point man,” to detect personnel ahead of or on the sides of the patrols. This task they accomplished time and time again. They earned the motto: “We Own the Night.”

The dogs are trained in Norway at The Norwegian Military K-9 Sentry.
