Hello all. I was curious about the "stand" and "recall". I've read a little about both on the site, but I haven't figured out what you use it for. What exactly is the stand? Do you use it for the dog to await another command? And recall? Is that the came as "come"? Or is that just a term used for something else? Thanks for your help, I just want to learn more.

Are you referring to the down w/ recall in obedience portion of Sch? While heeling, handler commands the dog down, but continues walking until signaled, stops & turns facing the dog. When signaled, the handler recalls the dog (dog needs to come in fast & straight). On command, the dog finishes in the heel position.
Thanks for the reply Susan. I think you might have just confused me a little more, haha. I've heard the terms thrown around, but I never understood what they meant. Your reply makes a little more sense now, but are these commands used only for the competitions and shows? Can you use any of the commands as an everyday training tool, even if you weren't competing? I was just hoping I could add more commands to my dog's list besides sit, stay, heel, come. Something to make his life more interesting.

Sorry David, I didn't mean to confuse you. But sure, you can teach these to your dog, it's not like there is trademark or anything Also, I agree, training for trainings sake is fun!
David, you can use the STAND command for when you groom your dog's coat -- You want him to stand still & not sit down, or squirm around...
It's also useful at the Vet's office, when you want the dog to stand for examination, to receive an injection, or whatever -- Most general dog training manuals teach all these basic commands...
The re-call command is given as COME (you don't tell the dog, "Re-Call", but you say, "Fido, COME") re-call is just a description or explanation of that command <:-)
Oh yeah, how would I teach the "stand"? My dobe is 6 months now, and he likes to move around a lot. The book I do have for training does not have anything similar to this, and the pics they have show smaller dogs that won't put up a fight, hehe. Thanks again!

If you try the "search" thingy (put in teaching the stand), you will find several opinions/techniques
