My SchH club doesn't do imprinting with scent pads/squares. It TOTALLY makes sense for me to use a 3x3 square, toss some food down, and watch until the pup recognizes the boundaries before doing even short tracks.
Thanks very much! WONDERFUL articles. I think they make TOTAL sense... I guess I just wonder why, when I suggested I was working on a scent square with my pup, they were like "uh... why?" Apparently it will not develop the good habit of moving forward as a short puppy track will or something.
Sport tracking is an entirely new beast for me as I undertake this SchH thing...
The action (or skill) of going forward comes very quick and easily once the other skills are in place. The controlled (or easily controlled) environment of the square makes learning the other skills much more efficient.
In Schutzhund the scent pad is worth 5 pts. Some Judges will deduct points if a dog just zip through the scent pad, verses a dog that spends time in the scent pad taking up the scent. I understand soon this will change, but currently the scent pad is worth 5 points.
Besides the point value, Judges are looking for pressure on dogs in the track. Dogs that stay working in the scent pad "appear" to be working free without pressure. This may or may not effect the scoring, but many Judges will take more points away from a dog's preformance if the dog "under Pressure", verses a dog that is tracking freely.
Akino v Kanonsburg SchIII, 05 IFR Team member (HOT);
just to help get it clear in my head, what "other skills" will come quickly once a dog has learned the scent-pad skills? which are, as i understand it, to search thoroughly for the bait, thereby learning the association between bait and scuffed/distubed ground.
i too, am entirely new at this training (though not dog-training per se). and i find it a challenge, fascinating, and really, just a hoot. what could be better than finding out how REALLY dumb i am?
