I know training sessions should be short and frequent. I'm curious about how much exercise time our 22 month old GSD should be getting. Jäger chases a ball or a soft frisbee for about ten minutes before eating twice a day. After dinner he plays with his food bowl by himself for another five to ten minutes (very active). I know that temperature and humidity will be factors but if Jäger has a particularly active day it seems to take a lot out of him for several days. His form is normal in that he has a trim waist and I can feel his ribs easily but I wonder if I'm challenging him enough.
Is there a rule of thumb like a tank or helicopter's operational/maintenance ratio? Something like 15 minutes of hard activity needs 4 hours of rest. The dog's capable of doing more, but, you'll have to give him extra rest later.
a related question for everyone: how about a 6-month old pup? we do drive-building 1-2x/day for 10 min or so, walks (well, he's running after a ball usually) 1/2 hr-hour 1-2x/day. sometimes i get concerned that it's too much, though it doesn't bother him <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
All dogs are different in drives and energy. So there is not a set ratio that works in all cases. What I look for is the point where the dogs peaks in his effort or drive. Sometimes I challenge this point, but most of the time I stop my training short of this point. Experience in training helps greatly, so if you are inexperienced attempt to find someone with successfull experience to help guide you.

I guess I didn't define my question well enough and that's my fault. I'm disabled with chronic pain/fatigue issues, so I'm confident Jäger will do more than me.
Let's say I'm having a session with the dog's trainer for a personal protection session. Should I be concerned with over working him the day before? Let's say I have an afternoon session, should we play hard in the morning?
I don't do anything with my dog on the day we do protection work until after the training, I want him to have all the energy and drive in the world when he goes out on that training field... the day before, fine, he has a whole night to build up that energy. I also crate the dog for 4 hours before doing any training with him. Once he's done with protection work then the exercise he gets depends on how much energy the training took out of him.
