Or being an enlightened, concerned and responsible dog owner? *Looking around* I am striving to be this en lieu of the complete ignorance and old wives tales with which I grew up. I have a LONG way to go, but if I keep my goal in sight I will get to where I'm comfortable and can keep on progressing with my dogs. I have purebred females (2). They are NOT gsds and they are NOT working dogs, but I love them nevertheless as my DOGS.
I was just curious who else was here to learn and had pets, just pets. Thanks.

I have a pet female GSD who is 7 months now. She is not a working dog, just the third member of the family, but I still train her.
Ed's Basic Obedience DVD is awesome and teaches you things that EVERY dog should do whether it is a working dog or just a family pet.

I am very new to dog training myself and was thrown into the fire after unwittingly adopting a border collie (or mix) who is animal aggressive and thoroughly obsessed with critters.
My family had a golden retriever growing up, but she was a very docile dog and we never did formal training with her. I am actually very glad to have adopted this hound from heck because if I hadn't I would have never learned so much about dog training. It has become my biggest hobby.
My dog is also just a pet, but he really needs a job to do, so for now it's obedience. We're doing Rally Obedience have one more leg to get our novice title. I like the idea of doing dog sports because it gives me a goal to work towards. Although, after going to an ACK show with me and seeing some of the interesting "characters" there, my husband is now afraid I'm going to turn into some kind of freak-o with border collie earrings and a picture of my dog on the back of my jacket. I told him I couldn't make any promises. ;-)
Anyway, I've been in it two years and I love it.

Hi Cat,
Ditto: with what Kevin said.
My dog’s have always been just pets and they learned enough so we were able to get by without any serious problems. But I was never able to get beyond a certain point in their training, they would listen great when they felt like it, add any distraction to the mix and forget it. They were off and running and no amount of yelling ever made them listen. I now have just one dog, a 10-month-old male rottweiler puppy.
The training DVD’s, Articles and the Posts on this Forum has not only taught me what I was doing wrong, but how to teach my dog to mind all the time, regardless of what is going on. I think it will make life easier and safer for my self and my dog. That’s just a small portion of what this site has to offer for us pet owners.
Regards,
Peggy

Yes I have pets only and I came here to learn how to make them into better citizens.
I have a mixed breed female that I got from a shelter, she is a lab x border collie x aussie (I think), she is really well behaved even with distractions, she will listen to me.
Then I decided to become a "foster mom" to a Louisiana Catahoula. My first foster is an adolescent male purebred. Like Anne, I was "thrown into the fire" as Catahoulas are ALL working dogs (there is no show line) plus they have hound temperament. On top of all that, this dog had been neglected and starved.
I'm not sure exactly when I found Ed's site but I managed to get things started off right, ordered the Obedience DVD, and my foster dog, age 15 months, is a fairly well-adjusted dog now (just a little jumpy still) and is ready for his new home.
The best thing is when I have a question I just come to this forum and get answers!

I have an 11 month old GSD who is from working parents. He's a pet, but I want to have a well behaved, obedient pet. I've got several of Ed's DVDs and find working with my dog is a lot of fun, for both of us.

I'm new in that my dogs have always just been pets, but not new in the sense that I've been "training" (mostly guess work) since I was just a kid, with my practice dog, a vizsla mix.
I got into showing (conformation) when I was 10, but my parents made me get rid of my dog (long story)...and then they got a manchester terrier, and I did all the training...and now I'm working towards competing with her in obedience and agility.
No working dogs, but I'm planning on a dog in the near future with which I plan to give tracking a try! I'm starting to get serious, and would really like to turn my hobby into something a little more serious if I can.

I have two GSDs, both working line girls. My older girl (Grace) is 4 now & my younger (Kira) is 8 months. They are both high energy dogs, but first and foremost, they are my pets. I also do obedience classes once a week with them...Grace is currently involved in Rally Obedience, while Kira is just working on the basics. We might do some tracking in the future.
I have had dogs my whole life, but these two are my first that I have personally trained. I have a lot to learn yet, but I'm young yet...only 25. My dogs are pets, but also part of my family. We travel with them and they are a huge part of our lives...I enjoy them very much!

I have a Doberman that we rescued. I first came here after he took a good chunk of my forearm when he guarded an area where a piece of raw chicken once existed. Several Leerburg DVDs later (and working with the trainer at the Doberman rescue organization) as well as taking an obedience course, he has become a great pet. He doesn't seem to have to proper temperament for Schutzhund, but he seems to love agility. Once he's a little older (enough so the jumping won't hurt his growing body) I will probably start doing some agility with him for fun.
