John, our club has fostered several (and kept some of) small and/or very young dogs seized during arrests of dogfighting groups and sent here from the Valley, and they have included a Pug with his ears hacked/sawn off, apparently to help eliminate appendages and focus fighting dogs on the throat, etc. (There are other possible reasons for this not-uncommon hacking off of bait dogs' ears: http://articles.ocregister.com/2010-09-15/crime/24650293_1_dog-fighting-stray-dogs-animal-cruelty )
Pugs, of course, have virtually no defenses at all, with the flat face and tiny teeth, so they can be used for a beginner fighter to build up confidence. This is what the local shelter, who asked us to pull some of these small dogs, was told. Obviously this 11-pound dog would have been torn apart in minutes, but he was seized before it happened.
I do feel a duty to bear witness, but I rarely read these items any more. I might see the title or the gist, but in order to remain useful to the rescuees from this cesspool of inhumanity, I have to focus more on what I can do at this end than on the POS torturers running this kind of thing.
(The Pug I mention here was the one who got several folks I know with non-toy-breed dogs into Pug rescue. He is twelve now, a loving little frosty face.)

Ah, John, we are only a teeny tiny speck in a tide of people who work against those POS dogfighting people and for the seized dogs.
Thank goodness there are so many. Every single one is needed. And more.

It really is beyond belief, isn't it? It comes to the point I think that for your own sanity all you can do is concentrate on the ones you can help.
People *are* becoming more aware. Even my local store has a poster for reward offered for dog fighting conviction type thing.

I've been following the story on Dog Examiner news. The puppy has been named Hope, I believe. If any of you have been following the story of Chamberlin, the dog abandoned tied to a tree for two months when his "owners" moved, your jaw will drop when you read this!

Some years ago we were finding dog dumps that appeared to have been used as bait or in fights; very sad conditions. It made me even sadder seeing some of the wounds that had semi-heeled without any or minimal medical intervention or comfort. A big bust uncovered a rooster fighting group within 10 miles, and those type of dumps stopped. I remember at the time, people didn't really seem to have any empathy for those chickens. It felt like the bust was meet with a shrug, chickens. It felt a little similiar when the dog fighting awareness started, shrug pit bulls. People can be so closed minded, maybe a defense mechanism, easier to not see it...
Type of people that participate, I don't know. My only hope is someday they are meet with the same fate. I know 2 wrongs don't make it right but am not sold on rehab'ing.
I think awareness can be painful, but thankful to those people that pushed to educate did it and continue to do it. No matter how big or small the contribution feels, it all adds up.

It will continue to get worse! The people who commit these heinous crimes against defenseless dogs know the penalties are not that severe. Your sentence will get reduce if you do PSA's for the human society. You get to go back to making Millions and all is forgotten. Sorry, I am a little passionate about this.
