Hi guys. I know most of us are not vets, but I am just trying to get some thoughts/suggestions about a sick dog. Neutered, male rott about age 8. Over past month he has been a little sleepier than his normal, which I attributed to colder weather and age. Over past month he has been doing some lip smacking, few minutes two or three times a week. Already on 3 small meals a day, started pepcid and not much change as far a lip smacking.
Friday it felt like a soft, softball to center of throat and has since resovled. No lymph swelling noted. Since Friday he will drink but eating only 25% of his normal amount, lost 8#. Sleeping a LOT, but responsive. Eyes look tired but bright. Saturday gave liter of fluids sc, didn't seem to perk him up any.
Physical revealed nothing. CBC, chem pretty normal except increase bands and neutr. T4 low but the TSH/thryoid panel normal. Chest and Abd rads normal except the liver was more rounded and less sharp than the normal. Addisonian panel will be back tomorrow. No diarrhea or vomiting, no cough. All I have to go on his mood and anorexia.
We do like our vet and in constant communication, it feels like for now all are stumpted. Not against a second opionion but, just but I guess it feels like most of the preliminary stuff is done and there is no direction. Will pick up an antibiotic later today to try that, baytril. (fecal floats, smears and snaps neg....did flagyl for 4 days now and no change)
At this point I can't think clearly. Any thoughts from your experiences?
Thanks Connie. I was thinking liver, kidney or pancreas disease would have shown something in blood studies, unless I had them done before significant changes occured?. Maybe u/s of abd would be helpful for a cancer detection, but I'll read through the links first and discuss with vet. THANK YOU
Read the links provided, very helpful. The serum cortisol came back 2.0 with a reference range of 2.0 - 6.0. Read up on Addison's. Plan for tomorrow will most likely be to repeat chem, liver studies and do the ACTH stim. So frustrating, I would hate to be a doctor.
