come on,
burns from leashes are part of training good, high drive fast dogs they are part of the proffesion just like bite scars, split palm nails, scratches etc...
when idont get burn from the leash for along period iam starting to get worried that maybe iam doing somthing wrong...
allthou if you use awell oilled good leather leash you minimize the burns alot.
when iwas in the army we hade that saying in hebrew about a dog when you wanted to say that he is agood waco dog- "he give me the burns"
istill use that phrase when iam talking about dogs (and other things )
Your right Sefi I've been burned more times then I would care to remember. Just try to be careful when your putting yourself in a situation where you can get tangled up in it. I really havent't found a solution other than that (being careful) and it seems like it still happens here and there.
I use a 20ft long line and I still managed somehow to get leash "burn" on my ankle , could it be that I wasn't coordinated enough? Nope, happened, sucked, learned a good lesson--watch out for high drive dog with leash attatched.
No, thankfully I did not lose a finger, but the leash burned off the top layer of skin on my right ring finger (about 3/4" x 1/2").
After thinking about it, some things I will do differently when working with the long leash:
Wear gloves & good shoes (no sandels)
Do not wear rings
Not try to grab the leash when the dog is swiftly moving forward, instead I will step on the leash. If it stops the dog, great! If it doesn't stop the dog, oh well....
Make sure the leash is straight behind me, and not wrapped around my feet at all.
I suppose, over time, I will get more confident and proficient with using the long leash. And the dog will get trained, so it won't be such a big deal....
Julie, don't forget to wear socks, too! And look on the bright side - by Sefi's standards, you and I are pretty good trainers Heck, I even got two burns in less than 2 months, so I must really be doing well. (Just kidding, Sefi )
