"furspode" new term for me - I love it!
I bought skipper a soft sided bag type crate to take him on the bus. When he stands in it the top of the bag is at about the mid point of his full height. length-wise, his nose sticks past the end of it. But he is able to scotch himself down into it and I ca zip up the bag. He is definitely stuffed into it, and he settles down and sleeps for the whole trip. We use it now for all his travel because he is so comfortable in it. When we arrive at our destination, we unzip the top and he stands up all sleepy and calm. I think you can err on the side of the smaller crate, especially if Ryuk has already fallen asleep in it.
With our other dog. We measured very carefully and bought the 48" wire crate for at home. It is definitely oversized and, although we haven't had any problems with him settling into it, it does take up unnecessary real estate in the house. Perhaps someday I will get organized and get him a smaller crate and sell or donate thips one.
I wouldn't trust my dog in them. Sara-dog (the pointer) Sure, she'd be fine in a mosquito net crate... but Koenig manages to bust out of good quality airline crates. If I need him in a crate, I just can't trust a fabric/flexible.
Then again, Koenig is nuts, so that pretty much explains it.
They are definitely one of those things that either will work for a dog or absolutely will not work at all
BTW, Jamie if you are interested, I got mine from PetEdge.com...they are the Guardian Gear ones...cheapest I have found.
The only problem I've found with the soft sided crates is that many of them seem to be zip-up....Which Ryuk gleefully unzips and strolls right out of XD he's not a crate breaker...but he's a crate opener and while he can open his wire one (but doesn't anymore) I like the option of clipping it closed...I don't seem to get that with the soft sided ones.
I'm currently looking on craigslist for a 32 long airline crate, however I'll be checking out all recommended sites to since often those are better deals (people want $100 for a used airline crate O_o I can get a new one for $60!)
I use the soft sided in the car, the one I have is the zipper type but it does have the 2 zippers so you can clip them together so it doesn't unzip. It is so much easier to manage and luckily mine aren't escape artists!
The airline crates for in the house we got at a store called Big R. It is like a Walmart feed/farming type store, the cheapest I found at the time.
Nuts...I am going to a hotel Monday, and I never thought of a crate for him in the hotel. I don't think he fits into his puppy crate....I didn't know he would grow so much.
My wonderful soft-sided crate used for the car is no longer wonderful. I put Juno in it after training today and returned to find him in the driver seat. He altered the 15in x 6in netted 'window' into a door and proceeded to go in and out the 'door' on our hour drive home.
Not really wanting the heavier, bulky airline crate so am searching out for ideas and thoughts.
They are actually pretty heavy and are generally held together with plastic clips.
I have heard that those are OK for quiet dogs that like to lay in their crate and the doors are rarely closed. Essentially a dog bed with a option of closing it up if needed.
In a car they are loud and rattly and are actually not super easy to set up.
I have a handful of friends that have bought them, and none are as pleased as they thought they would be....
Thank you Jessica, that doesn't sound promising! Back to the dreaded airline crate. It isn't actually that bad, I've just been spoiled to date. Appreciate your time/response
Here's what I have Foster Smith pet den rugged plastic metal gate cleans up nice. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=16017
I put it in the back set of my daily pick up and my dog jumps right in and will fall asleep on an hour ride.
She is definitely more comfortable in the crate than just in the back seat.
I used to have two but I had 1 in the back of my truck held with a load bar close to the cab and when I got home it was gone, it flew right out, can you imagine the looks on drivers behind me on the freeway oh man what a dumass.
No I didn't have mt dog in there.........
