The kinky fine nearly invisible hairs.... I've given up fleece completely. The lint thing on my dryer (a yr old dryer!) is all scratched up from me digging hair out of it.

A good bath ,blow out with a high velocity dryer, and brush with a large coat king tool. It's messy but it helps a lot with the shedding.

It's all in the drying.... With a force dryer, you can blast out those big ol' clumps. Try and find a local self-service groom shop- sometimes they have the 'real' dryers that can get out that undercoat.

You may laugh, but I use a soap free shampoo and then use Dove conditioner, then I put the shop vac on reverse and blow the coat out/dry. I've always used cheap conditioners, but after using the Dove brand just once I noticed that Shelby, the main shedding culprit, does not shed nearly as much when right before her bath she was putting out buckets of fur.
I also use the same products on myself and my hair and scalp have never been healthier!

We had buckets of fur coming off of our lab/golden mix even though we were brushing daily so we used the clippers to just cut him short for the summer.

Brush, bath, then after they're dry, brush again.
I've found that using some kind of "conditioner" after shampooing really loosens up shed undercoat and allows it to shed in the rinsing--MUCH more than just shampooing. I think the slipperiness of the conditioner allows the loose hair to rinse off. Just shampooing makes the hair "squeaky clean" and the loose hair tends to have more friction, sticking to itself.

You might want to read up here on the pH of dog skin versus human skin. Cheap or expensive, the pH of products for humans is inappropriate for dogs, whose skin pH is far from (less acid than) ours. Products for us are much more acid than those for the almost-neutral pH of dog skin, and are able to cause breaks in the dog's skin mantle ... breaches that can open a door for yeast and bacteria, etc.
The base of many conditioners for humans, in addition, can clog the dog's pores, slowing normal shedding.
... I also use the same products on myself and my hair and scalp have never been healthier!
Probably great for us! Where/how did you find soapless shampoo?

You know what's strange? I've been using all kinds of stuff, for dogs or not, on my pets for years and have never had a single one have skin issues. I know of several dog forum members on another website who only use stuff geared towards pets and they always have issues, especially with nasty yeast breakouts that cause really horrible suffering for the poor dogs.
For the record, the shampoo I use on myself is geared towards dogs.

Maybe you have alternated enough to restore the mantle to its proper pH regularly?
I have used people products in a pinch, but not regularly, after learning that the big problem is the constant pH modification with frequently-bathed dogs.
But anyway, I don't think that products for people would be on a short list of skin-problem triggers unless the dog is already pre-disposed or the product is used repeatedly. Malassezia, for example, would most often have something like allergies or seborrhea underlying it.
I have some material about pH I can dig up a little later.

QUOTE:
We hear this question all the time– “what’s the difference between my shampoo and my dog’s shampoo?”
You may be surprised to learn that a lot is different. Of course, if you run out of Fido’s shampoo and you use your own to wash your dog a couple of times, nothing will happen. Your dog’s hair won’t fall out and life will probably go on as normal.
But there are areas in which human and dog shampoos differ. You may not notice the ill effects of human shampoo if used only a couple of times, but after repeated use, you’ll start to see. ... Ph Balance. A dog’s skin is about 7.5 while human skin is about 5.5 (to put it in perspective, water is about 7.0). Therefore, a dog’s skin is more alkaline so ideally a dog’s shampoo should be between 6.5-7.5 or it could be irritating to the skin. ... END QUOTE
