he was great in the house last night. This morning i called the vets. i checked on line by law i had to take him to the shelter (no other way the vet's also said it had to be that way) It is a no kill shelter very modern. they assured me they would find him a good home, if the owners didn't call.(he's a good looking dog great temperment) possibly with a police dept they had another GS they showed me. waiting to be picked up by a PD, he also was non aggressive. if not a family who would keep him indoors, since he was used to being inside.. they also thought he must be lost. because he was in great shape even neutered, to bad he wasn't chipped. i felt comfortable leaving him. although i didn't like it. i couldn't keep him. i didn't sleep much last night worrying about the dog. I getting soft in my old age, years ago it wouldn't have bothered me at all. thanks for all you help i'll check on him in a few days. i'm going to keep looking for his owner
GOOD NEWS the owner just contacted me( nice family) i told him a tag or chip would have been helpful. main thing, they are reunited thanks again for the advice it worked. they talked to the vet's office

Good on you for taking the decision to save this dog in his time of need and give him shelter and a safe place in the warm for the night, and how great he has been reunited with his family, glad they are nice people too!
My male Pointer was scared off by a pack of loose dogs when he was young, they appeared through a dense bit of woodland and just ran at him, he legged it and it was the longest half hour of my life, luckily he was found quickly, the person took him to the vet who scanned him, and they called me, the relief was overwhelming, I bet this guys owners were beyond grateful you kept him safe.
I second that on no picture on any flyers. It makes it way too easy for someone who just wants "that" dog to Identify him. We are bad about picking up strays. Picked up a GSD a couple weeks ago. Found his owner, though. I never put up info that will allow a non-owner to identify. Best of luck with him.

John,
That's wonderful ... love a happy ending!
About including a picture, I would still include a picture. For one thing, I think that people are more likely to actually read the notice, if there is a picture and not just a sheet of text. Pictures can be taken so that distinctive markings are not visible. And, I think that the dog's reaction to the "owner", tells me what I need to know bout how he/she feels about the "owner".
Lets say you did put a picture of the dog, someone sees the ad and wants the dog that's not the owner, that person would have to know the dogs name to call him for me to let him go right?
I think you would also see the dogs reaction to the person and probably know.
But then again that might not work for some people I know, they know there dogs name and can't get them to come no matter how load they scream, lol.
