I use heartguard because in my area the risk of heartworm is very high. As for flea control, have you ever read the labbles? They say to wear gloves when putting on dog or cat, don't get it on your own skin, don't get it in your eyes, and other stuff like that. Doesn't that give you a clue that it is not the best thing for your pets? Fleas attack dieing animals and dead animals in nature, when a prefectly normal dog becomes infected with fleas it is because there is some kind of weakness in the immune system (not really something that can kill the animal, just something that attracks fleas). I suggest that if you are worried about fleas and ticks you should
A. Keep your animal on a healthy, natural diet
B. Use a flea comb regularly on your animal
C. DO NOT vaccinate
D. Use Erigeron on your animals insted of frontline or advantage.
Erigeron is a herb that repels fleas effectively and has a pleasant aroma. It is not bothersome to your animals at all.It should be put on your animals every day for a few dogs until there is a builup of the herb on the animal's skin and coat and then reapeated as needed. It soothes the skin ans helps to heal hot spots caused by the saliva of fleas. Also, when your animal licks and grooms itself its digestive system will benefit for it as well. There is also a new colloidal product, colloidol sliver, which is extremely safe, non-toxic, non-causic, biodegradable, and will be super acitve against fleas and ticks. Do not use frontline, advantage, or anything else topically on your animal that can not be ingested. Remember, everything put on the outside on your animal eventually goes inside when the animal grooms itself. I will also say that you should bath your animal every 2-4 months or as needed with a mild herbal shampoo or chemically free shampoo.Isoflavones is good for your animals, as is Lecithin, and Lifestar vitamin E, Liver Lovers, and Gelatin. Thank you all for reading, bye all.

In the Southeastern US I would give heartworm preventive year round. period.
After moving from Asheville NC, where we gave seasonally to Charlotte, NC we did not change our habits and wound up with a dog with heartworms and treatments. It is not worth it to put a dog through that.
The mosquitos are biting now and have been for about a month. This year will probably be a bumper crop with all the rain after several years of drought.
Concerning fleas -- agree on the natural diet. I had always had to deal with them until we did the raw food diet. It is amazing. simply amazing. (Is is that or is it that everyone else uses so many chemicals...I dont know....)

According to my vet, if you use the injection it does not protect against worms.

Cindy, be careful. I have heard that there are counterfeit products out there, that look just like the real thing, but aren't. People sell them online really cheep. If you're already aware of this, my apoligies, but I just thought I should mention it, for anyone thinking of purchasing Frontline or anything else online.

Good point, but this man's wife is a veterinarian and everything comes in the original sealed packages I've had no problems.

If you are talking about Proheart 6 when you are talking about the injection for heartworm I would be very leery.
Many dogs are having adverse reactions to this drug and Ft. Dodge is now writing letters to vets as they are seeing different reactions in the general dog population than they did in their controlled studies. I won't give my animals any medication where one of the side effects could be DEATH!!! (rimadyl is another one I would not use)
Better to give Heartguard or Interceptor as we know these meds are relatively safe....

Cindy:
In the link you provide, is a vet's prescription necessary ?. Are there other places on the web where a prescription is not necessary?.
Also in the prior question, I guess the combo I am somewhat confused about is Heartguard/frontline/ interceptor ? Which 2 would be a good idea ?
Thanks

A vet's prescription is needed for heartworm meds. I would use plain Heartguard and for ticks, use frontline.
The Heartguard plus and Interceptor just have extra stuff in them for intestinal worms which (IMO) is not necessary. If my dogs need to be wormed I will take care of it, I don't believe in giving extra "poison" every month on the off chance my dogs need it..
