I was at a Bernhard Flinks seminar last weekend and he said he routinely switches his dogs every 3 weeks between raw and kibble, so they are used to either one when he travels with them. He did not give specifics as to how he makes these switches, but I am going for a one-day follow-up this weekend at another of his seminars -- some of us are slow learners -- so I will ask him (if I remember) and post his answer. In any case, based on his experience it appears dogs can adapt quite well.
Sorry I'm a bit late with this, but I didn't get a chance to ask Mr. Flinks until after the seminar. Here's his answer:
"Because my dogs have no problem with changing food from one day to the next I change from one type of food to the next type in one day. If your dogs are more sensitive to change than change slowly from one type to the other type over a few days."
It sounds like his dogs naturally have iron stomachs, or switching every 3 weeks on a regular basis builds up their ability to handle the change.
Too Funny Anita, we should have both asked him at the same time because he told me the same thing when I asked.
I think Bernhards time schedule of feeding his dogs at 6-7pm and then Lights out after that is also a smart idea. He said that with no excercise after feeding, you minimize the risk of any bloat issues with your dog. I have now started to do the same thing at my house as this is smart thinking for your dogs health.
I also like that his dogs eat in less than 5 minutes or the kennel guy pulls the food. Of course the dogs know this and it never happens!!
I dont want to be the guy to pull the food from Fels kennel though............
thank you both for the info and effort and thank mr flinks aswell,
ithink according to all of this info and my recent expireance that iwill start to feed acombination of half raw and half kibbles to all of my operative working dogs all of the time.
and when will get afield work they will be ready to move to only kibble for awhile.
think iwill start right now, at least with half of the dogs and see how it goes.
maybe ican feed tham mostly raw and less than half kibble on routine when in base.
iwill search for the best ratio of raw vs kibble (best for the raw of course) if you guys have any openion or info about it please share.
the other question that remain is what kibble will iuse (iam still waiting for my supplyer to return me an answer on what from the list Sandy gave me is avaliable arround here).
