You guys are too funny, dating, drugs, marriage, therapy all way more expensive than dogs even on a raw diet, but combine all 4 sounds like a recipe for disaster.
Kelly that's great you saved Winchester I am surprised the slaughter guy called the rescues that was awesome, wonder if he lost his job.
A friend from Hawaii got to see the most dangerous animal in the world displayed at a zoo, it was a mirror in the cage.
A bad day with my dog is better than a good day at work,
unless your work is doing cool things with dogs.

One of the things I like about this board Joe, they give you some leeway on staying on topic.
Within reason of course.
More like a conversation would go with a bunch of us sitting on my back porch drinking ice tea. (Spiked or not depending on personal preference.)

You've got a point there! For about $5/day I've got two buddies that are always ready to get out and do something with me (and want nothing more than the chance to do so), make me take breaks from work to get out and exercise, keep me company when I'm writing papers, etc, etc, etc.
It's a bargain!

Sorry guys but I have to bring it back on topic, Kelly's story really hit me.
Winchester was from a farm about 2 hours south of me. There were 30- some other Belgians there, from seniors to babies. The owner of the farm went out one day with his gun and started shooting his horses. Only 5 got away without a bullet. The only "kill shot" he administered was to himself.
The police came out to the farm, and were horrified by what they found. Horses in all states of injury. All that had been shot were put down as they were too injured to save (gut shot).
You know, l cannot fathom what brings a person to this state.
I work with the mentally ill every day, from minor depression to bi-polar and full blown schizophrenia. Not in a treatment capacity (well…to me, much like dog training, every interaction is a cautious awareness of what they are learning) but in a capacity that provides financial support.
The majority of these people are not dangerous. Their illnesses have a capacity to distort their thinking but for the most part, like others, they’re just looking to get through life in this world. A world that can be cold and hard if we’re not mentally stable enough to fend off the criticism and ridicule that our fellow man is able to put on us.
Over half of all inmates in our prison systems have reported mental illness, major depression being the most common. We recognize that there are some very dangerous folks out there that, left to their own devices, are capable of horrendous atrocities.
Serial killers, suicide bombers, a man that chooses to take out his own family as his last act, this man in Ohio and Kelly’s Belgian owner just to name a few. Serious mental illness, perhaps. But they are making conscious choices to perform these acts.
Should they choose to stay on this earth and have the result of their actions judged, they face the most serious form of ridicule that man is capable of placing on them. Should they survive, get treatment (if possible) and explain and express true remorse for their actions, man also has the ability to forgive.
When they commit these horrendous deeds, knowing full well that their actions are meant to harm the living and then take the cowardly out, they leave no ability for me to forgive. I’m only left with what they gave me, an unexplained, heavy, sickened heart.
I’m sorry, but my previous post stands, I hope they rot in Hell for what they “choose” to do.

I do not think I would do well without my dogs. Why I might have to go out on a date sometime for companionship ;-)
My husband is convinced that I only married him so that I could have more dogs........

Kelly, that is so very sad. See, I just so can not imagine what he was thinking. Did he think the horses would be better off dead than with strangers after his death, or was he just mentally ill and 'taking them with him, or completelt delusional and not even aware of doing what he was doing...?
To many questions to answer when I can't put myself in his head, so to speak. I have a whirlpool of thoughts in my head. I wish I could understand, but then, I'm afraid to because, what if comprehension brings me into a darker place like the one these people suffered through?
Enough. Kelly, I'm glad you were/are there for Winchester.
I'm going to hug my dogs now.

Lisa, I would imagine that in horses as in people gut shots are one of the most agonizing ways to die. I don't think that even twisted he was thinking of the welfare of the animals.
And he heard those animals scream as he tortured the rest before he ended his own life.
Bless you for trying to understand and trying to put the best possible motive on his actions but sometimes.................

Just got to read this entire thread...Kelly, what a great story about Winchester. Obviously the exotic animal regulations need to bve revisited; an individual in NJ was just recently fined for housing 3 giant tortoises. Those guys are now in a "rescue zoo'.
And thank heavens that our dogs (and my cats) give me that reason to get out of bed in the morning.

The gut shots to those horses just sickens me. I don't get it, who knows what was going on in his mind. If this guy wasn't mentally ill...then good riddance, sorry but WTF? I'm glad Winchester has a great home.
Suicide is euthanasia to one feeling no pleasure, nothing but endlessly alone, hopeless suffering...the opposite of euphoria, a -high. You can't change depression by thinking of something happy. Its like a drug that feels bad, "negative heroin". Its like having the worst pain but emotional for weeks or months. For one who knows no end, its not cowardice to die. If you ever suspect anyone feels this bad, help them, don't call them a coward after they die, you probably couldn't handle it either.
Sorry for the rant, its very important to me. I hate to see anyone else die or suffer like that, including their animals. The irony is that their pets can help them through it, esp if they get some help. I have a few stories of my own but it would probably be considered TMI. Maybe I'll just write a book.
