LC: Lisa I sent you an email about this.
David D wrote quoting something I wrote earlier: The Dogtra is meant to be used with both hands. One hand holds down the “continuous” button while the other dials the stimulation level up and down
David D wrote: If you are starting a dog out on a collar how can you guide the dog into teaching to turn the collar off with both hands on the remote? This does not seem practicle.
LC: You’re right David. I’ve been busy on several fronts and didn’t give enough information. When first teaching the dog something new, I find the dog’s level, and then leave it there. Rarely do I need to change it because I control the distractions very closely. But after the dog has learned the movement the guiding isn’t necessary anymore. It’s also at that time that the distractions become less controlled.
LC: For example, in sending a dog on a running call-off, the distraction level increases as the dog gets closer to he decoy so he’s not going to feel the same level of stimulation that he felt when there was no distraction around. And so you send the dog and when you’re ready, you call him. If he doesn’t respond you incrementally turn up the stimulation until you see some sign that he feels it. Then he’ll call off. Your hands aren’t full of leash at that time.
David D wrote: I didn't want to bring my dog (to my seminar in MD) as he is just where I like him as far as trainning. 7 year old Sch III retired. I was just looking to broaden my knowledge on ecollars.
LC: David I understand perfectly not wanting to take a chance on some guy from the Internet messing up your training. If you want to come as an observer (no dog) it’s on me. Write me privately at Uncllou@aol.com for details.
LC: And thanks for the kind words Vince.
Lou Castle has been kicked off this board. He is an OLD SCHOOL DOG TRAINER with little to offer.
I seem to have a knack of asking innocent questions that set off incredible debates...maybe I should go to a politics or religion board.
Anyway, trying to take all this in and am coming to the conclusion that I'll wait a while before using the e-collar. After all, she's still real young and has alot of puppy in her (she just turned 12 months). I never had a problem training my other dogs, once they calm down.
No sense in ruining a good dog just because I sometimes lack patience. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />
Everything in it's own time, but geesh it's frustrating sometimes. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />
