The BS of A has a format for earning the badge, just unsure of the best way to interact with the sprouts.
Thanks...
Mike, I have not had any experience with this, but I did teach SCUBA diving to kids as young as 12 years old.
One thing that I will say is that, as opposed to teaching adults, once you have their attention they will perform exactly what you ask them to without overthinking what they are doing...
This might come in handy when teaching a kid how to behave around and interact with a dog...
I earned my Eagle some time ago....wont tell you how long...i earned the dog care merit badge...what are the requirements today...i know some things have changed...
i actually bred 2 litters of American Eskimo spitz whne i was in junior high....so needless to say i fullfilled the requirements
Not boy scouts, but I had a group of girl scouts come over to work around the kennel a few weeks ago, for their merit badge requirements. It was cold out that day - too cold to clean kennels which was my plan. So I gave them work gloves, pooper scoopers and had them pick out the dog exercise yard for an hour or so. Then I brought them into the heated office and brought one of my dogs in who was blowing her coat, and had them comb her out for the next hour. They did fine, I didn't really have to do much with them other than checking in to see how they were doing once in a while - and they earned their merit badges and saved me a couple hours of work in the process. win-win.
hi mike I am an eagle scout from long island ny and my father still runs that troop (retired cops need to keep busy, lol). i have seen merit badges ran by counselors in many different ways.
the most boring being the scout does all the work and then calls you up to test out. this shows ambition on the boys part, but i always liked it when there was some type of interaction.
the next way is to contact some a troop and offer your services. you can ask if there is any one interested in exploring the badge and you can set up a time to come to them for a seminar or have the interested scouts sign up to meet you at a shelter (seeing how that is one of the requirements)and you can explain or give a class from there. if you can find a willing shelter it would be a nice thing. be creative. its your badge. the more interaction they have the better.
sorry to be a bit long winded. hope this helps. if you need a hand in the future you can message me and i will send my phone.
