In fact, you can choose your marker. In my club there is a person using a ballpoint pen and another using an empty pocket-stapler.
And the verbal marker does not have to be "yes" (and in fact should not be if you use "yes" often in regular talk to the dog).
Also, I urge that you study your video 219 and your video 220 (Markers and Food) before starting the class. This will give you a grounding in marker training that will really enable you to see the big picture. Some little things might be different with a different instructor, but the big picture will allow you to see what is and is not important insofar as deviations go.
IMO, there is no better marker training instruction than what you will get on those two videos.
I have been using both on my puppy actually. The clicker seems to make more of an impression on him so I use it often, but I also use "yes" when hand space is at a premium. I just loaded them separately, and he doesn't seem confused; he will work just fine for both of them.
I use both yes and click. Clicker is very useful in certain situations, but can be a pain in others. Especially if you want to have both your hands to manipulate the dog or a dumbbell or some thing like that. Clicker is very useful in teaching new behaviours as I am forced to keep my mouth shut. It helps the dog learn faster.
