I know alot of people that feed raw and am comfortable if they are knowledgable on all the theories, OR using a preformulated raw diet like K-9 Kravings or Oma....
As far as "typical puppy food"
I have used a couple of different kibbles after seeing the difference a high quality kibble made in 2 dogs raised on highest-end Purina.
I use either Candidae or the EaglePack Holistics - depending on availablity. You need to stick with a game plan on feeding a young dog, not skip around alot because you are going to end up with major inbalaces.
Puppy food??? MOST vets and breeders will advise you not to feed any brand of puppy food after 5 or 6 months. With only 3 litters, I have used Eagle Pack puppy through 3-4 months, and switched to adult formulas. I started feeding gruel of puppy food and yogurt as early as I could get pups to eat. I used Struture supplement once a day until they were 12-16 weeks old or so. At 17 weeks, I had one male puppy who weighed 60 pounds...really good bone substance on that guy, no fat, his sister 2 weeks earlier weighed 40 pounds I think when I shipped her to Canada. Again, solid boned, big framed puppy.
IMO pushing "puppy food" into a pup that is healthy, parasite free and therefore utilizing his food well and in good shape can cause growth and development problems immediately and long term. You want them a bit lean as they grow to not overstress joints. Many people also advise that you don't want high high protein as you can get pano - never had it, so don't know for sure..but no puppy I have raised has been on high quality puppy food past 5 months.
