What is the oldest age a Belgian working GSD can be bred. She has never been bred before and she is currently 8 years old. Thanks for any help. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />
7 is really considered retirement age for the GSD reproductive cycle. Sadly- even then you are tempting fate with the possibility of problems.
The older the female gets the harder time they have pushing out the puppies. Old bitches are more likely to need a c-section and seem to have higher mortality rates in the first week of life.
My suggestion is to forget breeding your 8 year old.
The only time a female who is 8 years old should be bred is if she is in excellent physical condition, has been bred successfully before a number of times, is an incredible dog who's genetics are worth the risks, AND if the owner is prepared to deal with any health issues that crop up. Such as an expensive C-section.
Maiden bitches who are 8 years old should be left alone.
For me this is interesting. In Australia where I live you cannot breed a bitch over the age of 8 years under our Kennel Club rules. If you really have to do this you have to have a veterinarian certificate. This can only be done once.
It is considered not to be in the best interests of the bitch or of people purchasing puppies from an older bitch.
