Vancamp, I got so pissed when I read that "rottwhiner" thing. Than I saw your disclaimer at the bottom of your post and than I was fine. Just kidding.
Hey, my point is they can probably do the work but you will have to put in so much more work to bring it out of them. Why not just start with something MORE suited. I certainly wouldn't want to go one on one with one of these beasts. I would certainly rather have many other dogs as pp dogs first though. JMO
Joe, I don't want one either. Lots of better dogs out there IMHO. Like GSDs .
Stig, there are two breed organizations one is the official AKC Neo breed organization and they suck, no working dogs in their programs. The other is more traditional and is the FCI breed organization. I think??? Anyway they are preserving the dogs working ability and it's natural guard instincts. I don't remember what their names were. There was an article in Dog Word about the Neo and the difference of opinions between the two breed clubs. Of course the AKC chose the non-working one as their official organization.
Just my two cents worth,
I had an English Mastiff that I trained for Sch. His tracking was excellent, his obedience was good - but not nearly as "flashy" as smaller dogs (he weighed in at about 190#), his protection work was where I had problems. He had very little prey drive and was much too defensive. From other mastiff breeds I have trained (never worked a neo) I think this is common. Tried to take a short-cut and use defense first and then try to channel into prey work. I ended up with a dog that loved to bite and fight with the man, but with no concept that he was only supposed to bite a sleeve (I guess no one has ever claimed that Mastiffs are particularly bright). Once I gave up on Sch work with him, I did some suit work with him and he excelled at it. I have yet to see another dog that no matter where they grab the helper in the suit that they can either knock them, or wrestle them to the ground, within seconds. He was a crappy sport dog, but an excellent pp dog. He was also the sweetest dog I have ever owned. I still miss him everyday.
