Product Description

40% of the muzzles we sell are returned because customers make mistakes in measuring their dogs for a muzzle. We stock 60 different styles and sizes of muzzles, selecting the right one for your dog is on of the hardest thing you may have to do for your dog.

We will gladly exchange a muzzle for a different size but we cannot pay shipping on muzzle returns and exchanges. We hate to have to take this position but the number of returns has forced this policy.

We do everything we can to help customers determine what size muzzle to order. We have produced a streaming video (HOW TO MEASURE YOUR DOG FOR A MUZZLE) and we are happy to offer phone consultation.

Even with all of this help, it can still be difficult to pick the correct size. The only fool-proof way of not making a mistake is to either bring the dog to our office or do the best you can with measurements and order several different sizes, then return the muzzles that don't fit. With luck, you should end up with the correct size muzzle. The only downside to this approach is you will have to pay shipping charges to return the muzzles that didn't fit your dog.

If you still need help after reviewing our sizing video and charts, call our office at (715) 235-6502. We are open Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm.

Customers who have purchased a Leerburg muzzle have FREE access to CONDITIONING YOUR DOG TO A MUZZLE This course contains 31 short videos that explain using reward based training methods to condition a dog a to like wearing a muzzle.

How to Measure Your Dog for a Muzzle

About this muzzle

The JAFCO Plastic Conditioning Muzzle is designed to teach your dog to wear a muzzle. The large hole in the front allows treats to be passed to the dog while they wear the muzzle. As they start to associate the muzzle with a positive experience, they'll soon get acclimated to a muzzle and wear it without any complaints. If you want to use this muzzle to its full potential, we recommend you enroll in our self-study online course, Conditioning Your Dog to a Muzzle. This $20 course is free when you purchase a muzzle from Leerburg.

JAFCO Muzzles are a tried and true plastic basket muzzle that offers good security. It's great to wear for extended periods of time without inhibiting your dog's breathing, barking, or panting. Your dog can also drink water with the muzzle on (you'll need to teach your dog that it's okay to put the muzzle into the water before leaving them unattended for any period of time). These are easy to put on and off and will last for many years.

JAFCO Muzzles are made with polyethylene plastic with reinforced rubber straps. Please note that the clear JAFCO muzzle is much more pliable and flexible than the white or black color.

Design & Uses

  • To prevent wound licking
  • To prevent eating rocks, garbage, poison, etc.
  • To wear for an extended period of time
  • To wear during transport where a muzzle is required (much better than a cloth muzzle alternative which should not be worn for an extended period of time)
  • To prevent dog bites (note: JAFCO muzzles should not be used for police service dog training for muzzle fighting, especially with decoys who are not wearing protective equipment. We recommend using Leerburg's Heavy Duty Police Fighting Muzzle instead)

Free Online Course with a Muzzle Purchase

When customers purchase any Leerburg muzzle, they will have FREE ACCESS to Leerburg's Conditioning Your Dog to a Muzzle course (originally $20). This course contains 31 short videos that explain how Ed and Cindy use reward-based training methods to condition their dogs to wearing a muzzle.

Fitting a Muzzle for Your Dog

Figuring out the proper size muzzle can be a complicated process. We've created several mediums on assisting you with properly fitting your dog's muzzle. You can choose to enroll in our free online course How to Measure Your Dog for a Muzzle, view an instructional video, or read a detailed article to figure out your dog's muzzle size.

If you are still unsure of which size to choose, measure the circumference of your dog's snout as well as the length. You can call our office at (715) 235-6502 and we will do our best to help you decide the best style and size of muzzle for your dog.

Muzzle Sizing Tips

There are several things you need to know about sizing a muzzle for your dog:

  1. The muzzle should not touch the front of your dog's nose or snout the best option is to select a size 1/2 inches longer than the nose length. If the muzzle is too long, it will be pushed back on the dog's face and obstruct their line of vision.
  2. The muzzle's circumference must be larger than your dog's "nose or snout circumference." We recommend between one and three inches larger around than your dog's muzzle circumference measurement. If the muzzle is the exact same size as your dog's nose circumference, the dog won't be able to pant. It is very important that you give your dog enough room to pant while wearing the muzzle.
  3. In addition to length and circumference, owners of some breeds (i.e. the bully breeds or flat faced breeds) need to consider the width of their dog's jaw. It is easy to pick a muzzle size with the correct length but the muzzle may not be wide enough to fit the width of the jaw. Call or email our office if you have one of these breeds and need help.

There are several Facebook groups run by well-intentioned people who are telling dog owners to get these HUGE HUGE Muzzles. These folks claim these monster muzzles allow a dog room to pant. This advice is 100% incorrect. These huge muzzles come off too easily. If you have an aggressive or reactive dog, the last thing you want is for a muzzle to accidentally come off.

I have been involved in training police service dogs since 1985. I produced police K9 training videos on muzzle fighting. If you size a muzzle the way we explain your dog, it will have all the room it needs to pant when exercising.

This is a brilliant muzzle and I've recommended it to trainers here in Australia. It took only a few short and relaxed sessions for my dog to wear it happily. Although well trained, he is reactive in some situations, and the muzzle allows him a lot more freedom to go out with us. It will also be useful for vet visits. We got the clear version - it's so quick and easy to put on and off, so comfortable for the dog and I wouldn't use any other type of muzzle.

Brilliant design (I bought the two strap version), excellent quality, so simple and quick to fit. With the treat hole, it took less than hour for my large GSD boy to wear it happily. Plenty of ventilation, comfortable padding across his nose and he can pant, drink, take treats, anything other than bite. I now can let him run free on the beach or take him to the vet without having to worry about public liability. Would recommend to any responsible dog owner.

I just wanted to thank you for the outstanding service and the videos expelling on how to fit the correct size was 100%. I bought a size 4 but I sized it wrong because I used a shoe lass. But I'm keeping the the 4 because the other video on baiting your dog works perfect and that's why I'm keeping it. Keep in mind, if you buy the wrong size your dog will be blinded. And before you use the muzzle, make sure you watch how to bait your dog the correct way.

I recommend buying the "Meat Barn Meet Rolls." I bought 6 of them and I cut them up just like the video explained. I've been a Leerburg customer about 2 years and will only buy from the best.

Thank You
