Hello board. I have a question concerning my new dog. I just brought the dog home about five days ago. He is nine months old going on ten and is exhibiting some strange behavior. I did expect the dog to go through some adjustment from the change in his environment, but I just wanted to know what people thought as I am only a novice. When we went to see him he had a lot of energy and drive. He barked and played and went after the ball quite well. He is the German Shepherd type I find appealing and he showed some potential in my eyes. Now that he has been home with us he is the most “laid back” dog I have ever owned. He doesn’t exhibit much energy outside like he did at his home. He doesn’t bark or make one peep, not at sirens, lawn mowers, or door bell. Should I be concerned, or is he still adjusting. Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you
I'd say just relax and let him settle in. The barking at sirens, doorbell etc. will soon become old and an undesired behaviour!
Maybe the dog at his old home was unsure of his position in the pack and tried to take the lead. Now he's with you maybe he feels he has a leader and has no need to defend the pack.
I may be wrong but that's what I read into it from here.
He's still a pup and will go through a lot of "funny" stages while he matures, especially now with his hormones about to hit the roof!
John is right - the dog is a baby. They dont readjust over night. Start to do drive work with him. This improves a relationship as quickly as anything I know. http://leerburg.com/101e.htm
In the end, the more time spent wiouth you squishing his temperament the better he will be

I'll second that! I have used this DVD and my dog PROPERLY bonded with me after using the tequniques here. Helped me a great deal with Obedience training as well.
