Not sure how I get how a very nasty case of regional misgovernment in a society that views dogs differently than ours gets extrapolated out to the entire nation of China as a bunch of orphan-clubbing terrorists (and encouragement for hoping they keep blowing each other up). Seriously, this incident is bad, but think about the logic of what you're pulling out of it...
The depths of human depravity? Check out what the Chinese went through in the Great Leap Forward or the Rape of Nanking. Take a look at what is happening today in the Sudan or the Congo. On a more minor level, take a gander at Canada's sterilization program that ran for indigenous people and the mentally handicapped until 1972. Or any of the dozens of incidents that we might have prevented as a nation (Rwanda, Darfur) and others we couldn't in the last century. Killing these dogs this way is hideous...but it's wrong to be making the general comments you all are making. It's at best revealing a profound ignorance of other people and the limitations they are trapped under because of corruption, misrule, and profoundly bad ideology.
Take a trip to Shanghai. The population there, with the dayworkers, runs around 30,000,000. I have been there and have seen neatest skyline I have ever seen, I've walked down a street with over a half-million people on it, I've seen the night markets and the quality of the food preparation there (not good). Then imagine the notion of something like SARS or rabies or (and we better all be thinking about it because it's coming) avian flu running through a place like that. Simply put, it cannot be controlled and it cannot be monitored. Extreme things like this culling aren't surprising to me at all.
Corrupt government? Absolutely. Societal deference to bad government policy? Not much choice, beaten in through many generations of human suffering.
Bad people who club orphans? Not as a general rule, and we don't exactly have a nation of shining do-gooders overflowing in our prisons.
Sorry to rant, this pisses me off. I wish for the day when a sob story about dog euthanasia in a society that is screwed up for so many reasons beyond the people's control becomes the depths of human depravity.
Want to protest this? Stop shopping. We enable it every time we buy a cheap shirt at Walmart, virtually all electronic goods, a counterfeit (whether we know it or not) good off of eBay, every single time we choose to buy what's cheapest or not recognize the source of goods. Think hard about telling your congressperson to oppose China's inclusion in the World Trade Organization. Whatever protest you want to hang with...even PETA will take your name and number on this one.
But don't make this out to be something more than it is. And recognize it for what it is.
