The movie was great. I have a mini schnuazer Charlie who has had an anaphylatic reaction after getting his rabies and 2 series of puppy vaccines. We are lucky that we live less 2 miles from an emergency animal hospital. This was 1 1/2 years ago.
I searched for a vet that would be good for Charlie after he had his reaction and thought I'd found one.
The week before last after Charlie had been in to see the vet to have routine labs and tests done to assure his health he was given two vaccines. One for corona virus and one for leptospirosis.
He started acting strange, tired which at first I thought it was normal then started starring off into space or just at me for long periods of time.
About 4 or 5 days after the vaccines were given I came home from work to find him with small tremors noted in his legs and throwing up. He had developed a large induration at the injection site about 8cm in size. I took him to the emergency animal hospital where he was given dexamethazone(steroids) and oral anitbiotics to take for one week.
While at the Emergency animal hospital I learned that Charlie did not need either of the vaccines and am very disappointed, highly frustrated and angry that his vet who knew Charlie had a serious reaction to vaccines would sugget he have two that he did not need.
I have a follow up appointment with the vet this week at which time I am going to ask him why he would have suggested something that Charlie did not need esp given his history.
The emergency animal vet told me that corona virus has never been isolated in a canine and that is not recommeneded for dogs. He also told me that since we live in Arizona we do not have Lyme disease, since we do not travel with Charlie to where he would be exposed to such he did not need it which is what the other vaccine was given to prevent.
I feel very sad about all of this as I allowed the vet to make these decisions for Charlie because this is his area of specialty. Since I stated researching the topic I have made some amazing comparisons about Charlie and his vaccines. He received his puppy shot two early and the vet that first assessed him said that the breeder who did that may have caused his immune sysytem to be damaged as a result.
I had a small nickle size area that appeared to be a large scab of skin located on his right shoulder removed off of Charlie about 3 or 4 months after his first puupy shot at the vet. I was worried that it was cancerous, it was not and he received antibiotic treatment for such. I did not think that it might have been related to his vaccine. Now I am not so sure.
He had his anaphylatic reaction in which his face swelled and he was grunting to breath after his rabies and 2 puppy series were given on the day he was neutered. After this any time he received a vaccine he had an IV and was premedicated and observed all day.
I found out afterwards that it was not a good idea to vaccinate on the same day he was neutered. That was done at the humane society and I am disappointed that they would not promote good health for animals by suggesting or requiring owners to split up dates for vaccines and sterilization procedures.
The real icing on the cake is the realization for me professionally about vaccines. I am a neonatal ICU nurse and care deeply about my patients. Now I have become very passionate and feel that it is important to do something about vaccines, not only for animals but for humans also. The ramifications of vaccines have already taken a toll and I am trying to figure out the best way for me to help.
First I would like to know if any one of you might know if there is anything I can do about the breeder who vaccinated Charlie to early. Breeders should know that harming an animals immune system only sets the breed up for further problems. Is there any way to report this action to help prevent this from happening?
I feel there should be some ramification for the vet who vaccinated Charlie this last time. I feel that this was malpractice and am now looking for a new vet. I have the American Animal Hospital Associations 2006 vaccination guidelines and plan to discuss them with Charlie's current vet as we have thought of him as a great practitioner in the past.
I have a legal plan through my work so I am going to see if I can get a lawyer to take my case even it is only to recover the cost of this last emergency animal hospital visit. Does any one have any suggestions about any of the latter?
I am looking to find a homeopathic vet and plan to search the web as well as look through the blogs here and am looking for recommendations from any one.
I am going to be requesting some article searches about vaccination research and would like to know how I might get the news media to pick up some stories on this. I plan to look over the messages here for further articles, movies, books etc. to help educate myself.
I appreciate all of you who took the time to read this as it is so long. I appreciated any suggestions and promise my message next time will be shorter.
