I know nothing can be done about this, but i have to vent.
Like i was saying in my parvo post, there are a pair of Pit puppies, maybe 5-6 months old, not aggressive, but not friendly.
They live 2 houses down from me.
They live loose in a fenced in yard, are never brought in the house, and have been that way since they were just weeks old. This, though it bothers me, isn't the problem.
These puppies get out of the fenced yard several times a day. The owners leave the gate open, plus there are a few holes. These dogs come in my yard, and if i am walking mine, they brazenly approach us. I have asked them several times to get the dogs.
These people leave their kids outside, the dogs out loose, and the gate wide open. Everyone plays in the streets, and it's not exactly a quiet road.
The oldest child is maybe 6, youngest is 1.5.
So i was coming home from my walk, and everyone is loose. I didn't se the pups, but i knew they were there. We walked past that house, and sure enough, these dogs came charging out, I whipped around, and brandished my Chuck-it at them, and told the kids(no adults around) to get the dogs, if the dogs came any closer, i would hit them. Meanwhile, mine are freaking out, trying to get to the dogs, and as i have a dog aggressive dog, i can't let these puppies get that close.
The oldest kid tries to get the dog. It had no collar, nothing, and being a puppy, naturally was hard to hold on to(they are masters of escaping!), he could barely keep that dog under control. I told them, if they couldn't keep that dog behind a fence to put it on a leash, like i have asked them countless times, but nothing has changed.
Animal control is worthless here, i have called them, several times about loose dogs on my street, but they always show up when the dogs are contained, and i even offer to show them pictures, animal control isn't interested.
That is almost more frustrating than this, the fact that our animal control does nothing even though laws are clearly being violated.
I will not let those pups near my dogs, even if it means i have to hit/kick or mace them, but i hate that, they are just pups.

As a Pit rescue I find this quite troubling. May I make one suggestion that has helped others?
Write them a clear letter stating that you have had incidences with their dogs being at large. Ask them to properly maintain and confine the dogs from public areas. Make them aware of the obvious, that the fence is broken and left open. Send it register mail, signature required. This will come in very handy if and when the day comes that you do have to unfortunately strike their dogs ( hit the kids too while your at it ). it leaves no room for the claim of ignorance. Also it establishes that they have been put on notice, and who knows, maybe they will surprise you and actually do something about this. In this hectic day and age, some people are just so busy they neglect basic things and forget to consider others.
I have one sketchy dog and I re fenced in my already fenced yard for 4k I didn't have. Its a given when you choose to home these dogs.
I hope you and your own dogs remain safe and issue free.
Good luck

the weird thing is, we have talked about this, with animal control right there.
They aren't busy, they are ignorant wanna-be thugs with pit bulls they won't care for, they don't care about their dogs, they are just property, something to sit outside and maybe bark when someone comes up.
I have recently had some dogs die from parvo, and have asked these people to keep their dogs out of my yard,i explained exactly what it is, and what it does, and they don't care, and i know those don't aren't vaccinated, nor are they being fed a diet that would allow for non-vaccination.
These people have these dogs for status, and keep talking about "oh, they aint ready yet, they ain't ready" when people stop by to ask about them. Ready for what? To fight?
The major thing is, they, and the people on the other side of them, who i got the litter of rescued pups from, have threatened me if i talk to them again. The police have been involved, because of the threats, so yeah, it's not like i can even step on their property without expecting a physical fight.
I will hopefully be moving soon, but until then, i just have had enough.

Mallory-
I agree with everyone re: writing the letters to keep a written record - I would also agree with the other poster that you should cc: Animal Control. But one thing that I'm also concerned with is asking a child (especially as young as 6 years old) to "get their dog." If, heaven forbid, the dog turned on the child in the heat of the moment, it could be tragic. I hate to say it, but the kids aren't responsible for controlling these dogs, even if they are the only ones around to do it. Their parents need to do something before someone gets hurt.
Good luck and be careful!

exactly, the kids aren't responsible, and if something did happen, it would be horrible. But i had 3 dogs, who would have literally killed that puppy, so it was that, or have a kid get a minor bite.
And to be kind of heartless, if either one happened, maybe that would be a wake up call for the parents. No dog, especially a pit bull(no matter how young, even though i love them) should be left loose with a child.
I had to have someone get the dog before it got to mine, because if it did,and they were fighting, and the kids came over to get it, the kids would be bit by my dogs, who will do more damage than that puppy.

I know you were between a rock and a hard place - I understand. Do you have a fenced yard? If so, if those dogs come in your yard, could you close the gate w/them in your yard and then call animal control to come and get them? I don't know how big these dogs are, but can you catch them and take them to the humane society, so the owners would have to go get them? (I don't want them to end up in the shelter for adoption or euthanasia or something, but doesn't the shelter let owners come and get their own dogs?) I'm not sure how that works - I haven't had much experience with the Humane Society. But maybe if it inconvenienced the owners to go get their dogs, maybe they'd confine them better. Just a thought...it sounds like they're pretty ignorant and/or irresponsible, so maybe it wouldn't matter to them...
P.S. I'm sorry, I know it wasn't funny at the time, but I got a chuckle out of the image of you "brandishing" your Chuck-It. )
