I first saw that video of Claudia Romard's JRT awhile ago and sent it to every dog person I knew. I think it's fantastic! Apparently, Mr. Murphy was such a spit fire that she taught him Schutzhund as a way to keep that craziness in check. He could have gone further if it weren't for his size!
I saw Claudia a few months later at her seminar and there was a little boy working a JRT puppy and you could see her fondness for the breed. It was pretty cool.
Apparently, Mr. Murphy was such a spit fire that she taught him Schutzhund as a way to keep that craziness in check.
I've sent this one on to people I know who have JRT's, usually because they are always talking how crazy their dog is... I'm like "here, this is what your lil doggy *should* be doing"
Mr. Murphy herniated a disk in the upper part of his spine and was neurological in his hind legs. He was in extreme distress and in an awful lot of pain. For two weeks the vets at Tufts tried any kind of medication out there to ease the pain and get the pressure on his spinal cord down. After two weeks of trying and seeing my dogs in so much pain I made the hard decision to get him out of his misery. It was a very hard and painful decision, but he is in a better place now.
Surgery was not on option for us because the dogs have to be kept crated for a few months and the chance of success would have been 50%. I did not want to have him get through that and then find out that it did not work.
We still do not know what caused the hernia, he had not done any kind of jumping at all. He was actually retired from bite work a few years ago. It just came from one hour to another. I came home from food shopping and he was standing in the kitchen, not moving at all and as soon as I touched him he started SCREAMING. It was horrible to watch him suffer.

Life is too short to spend it trying to train show dogs
I am sorry to hear about Murphy. You did an absolutely fantastic job with him. Poor little dog.
I must say that when I clicked the link and watched the video, I had tears of laughter streaming down my face BUT I couldn't believe what a good job he did. The only reason it was funny was because of how small and innocent looking he is, but my gosh he took that work seriously and did everything exactly as a Malinois would. I really commend you for that work. He looks like he really enjoyed his work.
P.S. He could have shown those Show Shepherds a thing or two. I know nothing about Schutzhund at all, but when I saw the videos of the Sieger sch trial, and then the video of your dog, even I could tell who was doing it right. Congrats.
